The Expanse design balances room to move with the weight and warmth demands of backpacking. Explore hoodless construction, internal volume adjustment, and the prototype changes behind a simpler night in the mountains.

Special Projects starts with gear made for narrow, demanding use cases rather than broad appeal. Tayson and Brigham break down the Resolve Down Anorak’s box-baffle construction, dual-zipper pullover design, cold-weather hardware, insulation system, field testing, intended conditions, and limited launch plan.

Ask OV 14 connects ultralight backpacking principles to hunting, family loads, gear durability, and the mental side of hard miles. Tayson and Brigham cover pack-weight and volume thresholds, shared gear systems, optics and shelter tradeoffs, purposeful breaks, and the line between ordinary discomfort and a real reason to stop.

A five-day Colorado Trail trip from Tennessee Pass toward Buffalo Creek shows how late route changes, foot problems, water uncertainty, and stopped time shape a 100-plus-mile plan. Use the field details to build more margin into long-mileage routes without depending on perfect conditions or identical hiking speeds.

Ask OV 13 covers water filters in freezing conditions, dry-stretch planning, map reliability, and personal calorie needs for backpacking. Tayson and Brigham explain how to protect or skip filters in cold weather, read water-source evidence with skepticism, scale water carries, and build a food plan around the hiker and route instead of a universal calorie number.

Originally released July 16, 2026, Tayson and Brigham discuss adapting a Colorado Trail plan around fire, reducing food fatigue, repackaging and checking meals, improving pad and pillow comfort, leveling a campsite, and troubleshooting trapped air in water filters. Fire, closure, route, product, support, and channel statements are historical, while health, nutrition, food-integrity, sleep, warmth, and filter comments remain general discussion rather than medical or current safety guidance.

Outdoor Vitals marks 12 years with a clear gear direction: performance-first ultralight equipment for remote wilderness, smarter product development, better availability, and continued work on packs, apparel, women’s-specific gear, and the CIRC tent roadmap.

The team breaks down a three-day Coyote Gulch trip, including Hurricane Wash logistics, Hole-in-the-Rock Road, wag bags, Jacob Hamblin Arch, Stevens Arch, sandals versus trail runners, Leukotape limits, gaiters, cotton versus polyester sun hoodies, and desert canyon safety.

Ask OV answers practical backpacking questions about jacket packability, Pursuit Fleece layering, why ultralight matters beyond big miles, and choosing one pack for day hikes and weekends.

Ask OV 11 covers practical gear questions: water filters versus purifiers, why the Platypus QuickDraw keeps working well in the field, how backpack frame stiffness should match load, comfort camping without overpacking, and why hooded layers often come first.

Originally released April 3, 2026, Tayson and Tyler use Tayson’s Spike Camp shoe switch to compare weight, stack height, cushion, grip, stability, fit, effort, speed, and fatigue on repeated climbs and descents. The Hoka model specifications, lap calculations, injury observations, and performance outcomes are preserved as April 2026 event-specific personal evidence rather than current specifications or universal footwear guidance.

Originally released March 13, 2026, Tayson and Tyler explain how pack weight, progressive training, representative terrain, pace, fueling, hydration, foot care, recovery, and mental judgment shape readiness for a 20-mile backpacking day. OV 100 participation, registration, included items, dates, pricing, completion rates, and related offer details are preserved as historical March 2026 context rather than a current promotion or guaranteed training outcome.
