Ultralight Down Balaclava / Hood

Just ordered one to Austria. Very light, high production quality. Although my head is pretty big it fits comfortably. Very very light weight. Just that I did not test it out yet. But since i sleep with a quilt, it should be a great ad-on.

Be good to have in coldest weather

It is really inportant to keep your head out from under your sleeping quilt, so that your breath doesn't add moisture to your sleeping system. This balaclava keeps my head warm. On the coldest nights I layer a fleece balaclava (that covers my nose) and beanie under this down balaclava to get really toasty warm.

For COLD day hikes or Nights sleeping this is a great addition. It’s light weight, warm and does not obstruct your view. It is the perfect addition.

I had the opportunity to use the OV Balaclava in Colorado for a few nights over Labor Day, the lows were around 40 degrees. It was almost too warm to wear, I will consider it a must have item for any future trips for the temps are 50 and below.

I bought this on a closeout from OV and since winter has not arrived, not had a chance to use it outdoors. Out of the box the fit is comfy and it is as light as a feather. I will use it this winter with my quilt sleeping system. I will also carry it with me on a western hunt & will use when glassing if it gets really cold as it will not take much space in my pack.

To lighten up my the base weight of my backpack for an upcoming hike, I went with a quilt instead of my heavier sleeping bag. My biggest worry was not having the hood my sleeping bag provided. Well, the LoftTek Hybrid Balaclava totally alleviated my worry. The “hood” moves with you unlike the hood of my sleeping bag. The LoftTek hood is lightweight, warm and will make the transition from sleeping bag to quilt much easier. While I haven’t used this with my quilt, I did test it outdoors during a recent extreme cold snap and it performed perfectly. I would definitely recommend the LoftTek Balaclava.

I used this in conjunction with the Stormloft 15 Quilt. It kept my head and neck warm in upper teen and low 20 degree weather during my most recent Sangre de Cristo mtn trek.

I hate wearing knit or fleece hats while camping at night. They always give me a headache. This hood is loose enough to not cause a headache but plenty warm. My only complaint is that it is noisy, but I can live with that. It does exactly what I need it to do. Excellent quality! Nice and warm. Fits great.

I love this down hood. I'm using it along with my montane down pullover and my split atom half bag ( which I made out of a marmot Atom sleeping bag) for my summer sleep kit on the AT

I get really claustrophobic if I sleep in my sleeping bag with my head in the hood, so I needed something to keep my head warm while allowing me a little more room in my bag. This was exactly what I needed!! Super warm, comfortable, and soft. Yay.

LoftTek™ Hybrid Balaclava / Hood

I have only tried them on. Felt nice and warm, but thought is was coming same color as in pic which I black. Nope, it is gray.

I am a side sleeper who goes from one side to the other during the night. I use a quilt and my head tends to be the only thing that gets cold. I have used a couple of other balaclavas to keep my head warm but they moved around my head and would require adjustment. This OV one stays in place and is plenty warm. Tested last weekend at 34F, toasty warm all night. This will now go on every trip.

Not only is this balaclava warm and toasty, but it’s cozy. Outdoor Vitals has solved the problem of down becoming wet from breathing into it and cinch cord toggles digging into the back of your head. Its new design employs LoftTek hybrid insulation that doesn’t fail or collapse, even when it gets really wet. A loose-fitting elastic band, as opposed to a cinch cord in the back, isn’t even perceivable when laying down, or simply wearing upright. The balaclava doesn’t block vision or breathing and doesn’t get all twisted up while sleeping. It fits comfortably around the neck — one of the more sensitive areas that I often feel a chill — and the front cinch cord allows you to bring insulating warmth closer to the mouth, without interfering with nose breathing. The hood extends to the top of the shoulders without bunching and provides extra length in the back to maintain heat. Using with a 0 degree quilt, one night the temps dipped to 30 degrees. The hood was plenty warm. It kept its position on my head when changing from back to side sleeping.

The Balaclava fits snuggly, but not claustrophobically, and it covers your neck way down, so no drafts can possibly get in. Very well designed in that regard. It's perfect for temp conditions in the 50s or below. Sometimes when temps are in the high 50s or higher, I wake up a bit sweaty and take it off. But when in doubt of the temps, I'd bring it, as it's light and small, and can easily turn a cold night into a comfortable night. I love my Balaclava, or as I like to call it, my Baclava.

This a must have for hammock sleepers. I tested it in 22 degree weather, and I was toasty warm all night. I switched to my tent the next night, and kept it on, recommended for both hammocks and tents. I also wore it as a hat the whole time I was out. Extremely versatile, and a huge value!

I LOVE my Balaclava! It’s super light weight, keeps my head insanely warm, doesn’t mess up my hair (yes that’s important to me), and I love how compressible it is. Hearing is a bit difficult if you’re on alert for potential wildlife visitors, but you’re also wearing a hood over your head so keep your expectations realistic.

I’ve worn this as my only head protection in 18 degree F with 20 mph winds and stayed pleasantly warm.
