Fabric

3DeFX Technology

Four types of spiral-shaped fibers are intertwined to give 3DeFX insulation more loft and stretchability than traditional microfiber synthetic insulations. This insulation stretches with you as you move, allowing heat to escape & keeping you at the perfect temperature!

Basically what this means is that you get a warmer insulation that weighs less & helps regulate temperature.

Utilizing 50% recycled 3DeFX+ Insulation we created a jacket that packs smaller, weighs less, and keeps you incredibly warm! Normally, the performance & durability of recycled material is lower than non-recycled materials (not as lofty, not as durable, heavier from impurities, etc.).
But that’s not the case with the Vario Jacket!

100% of our materials are sourced & created by Toray. We know where everything came from on a molecular level! That means there are no impurities in the recycled insulation fibers. Every part of it is planned & recycled purposefully.

The result is that the 50% recycled 3DeFX insulation has 0% performance & durability degradation after extensive testing (compared to normal 3DeFX.) It will last just as long. It’s just as lofty & warm!

I really like this jacket

I have been in a few snowshoeing trips with this now and it does great. I stay warm when I need to and can dump heat when I need to. I highly recommend this one. At 6'1" and 190lbs, the large tall fits perfectly, I could probably be fine with just a large.

Versatile, Wind Resistant Outer Jacket

Since purchasing my XXL Vario Jacket (Stellar Blue) I am throughly pleased with the fabric, fit and weight. The fabric is not only smooth and soft the few times I have been out in light rain it beads and sheds water quite well, the fit is perfect and leaves room for a base layer. I especially like the adjustable hem which prevents wind entering from the bottom of the jacket and the hood not only fits well it is warm. The only slight negative is that the zipper pull is difficult to use with my big fingers. My Vario weighs in at 11.1 ounces. I generally use the Vario as my go to jacket when temperatures are in the high 30’s to mid 40’s with and without wind and I am very pleased with the performance. Today I tried to push the limits with a walk, I used a Tern Hoodie base layer, Ventus mid layer, the Vario and a Merino Wool Gaiter. Temperatures were in the mid 20’s with feels like temperature 16*. Wind gusting to 16 MPH. Bottom line I was warm.

Love this jacket with one caveat

I absolutely love this jacket. Has become one of my favorite jackets for backpacking/ hiking but also for everyday wear. Fit is great. It's super light and warm enough without being too warm to be active in. My only concern is with the durability. after only a few months of light use there's already some wear and pilling in the fabric on the inside of the collar area just from it rubbing against few day old beard stubble. It is an ultralight jacket, so you do need to take some care with it, but if stubble is enough to wear a hole in it, that's a little too fragile for my taste. Time will tell how well it holds up.

Great Jacket! poor hood design

** i'm a long time member/customer of Outdoor Vitals. They are absolutely a top notch company with excellent, quality products and their customer service is the best.
I'm not prone to complain or write negative reviews.
However! imo The adds comparing the Vario jacket with the "million dollar" aka: ( and discontinued) Adventure Jacket are quite inaccurate. The claim is that the Vario completely replaces the features and functionality of the Adventure jacket.
Unfortunately this not the case.
I own both jackets and I have been 100% satisfied with the Adventure Jacket. I've put it through years of use and I only have accolades for it!
Comparing the two iackets, there are many benefits with the Vario Jacket. It's light as a feather. The fabric is very comfortable and stretches with you for athletic performance. The pit zips provide good ventilation you do not get overheated . It's also very packable.
The main difference between the two jackets (and inadequacy) of the Varo jacket is with the hood and neck.
The hood on the Aventure jacket is insulated and has cinch cords for a great fit and also a visor for rain and wind protection . The jacket zipper also goes all the way up the neck to the chin with the cinches allowing for a perfect seal all around the face and neck.
Any hiker/bakpacker/outdoor person would know the absolute importance of heat retention in the head and neck.
Comparatively, the Vario hood has no insulation or cinch straps of any kind. The front only has some elastic.
I had seen it used in the adds with a baseball cap for a visor, however, on my first backpacking trip with it, my cap blew completely free from the elastic and down the trali. The neck also does not come all the way up to meet the hood leaving no seal whatsoever with a hood that is just thin fabric. The wind just blows freely about.
I'm very pleased with the body of the jacket (I would only prefer a a exterior chest/phone pocket).
However, the functionality of this jacket, would be complete if the hood were ,for example, made of the same fabric as the jacket itself and had cinch cords.
Any incurred weight gain would be warranted.

It’s warm.

I own the Ventus already so it’s nice to have a version with zipper. It’s nice and warm while the pit vents work great on regulating heat.
