Why DragonWool Exists (Hybrid Advantage)

Why Your Baselayer Matters More Than You Think

Built For Comfort

Why DragonWool Exists (Hybrid Advantage)

Traditional merino is comfortable but slow to dry. Synthetics dry fast but can smell and feel clammy. DragonWool combines both—using merino next to skin for comfort and polyester on the exterior to move moisture away quickly.

The result is a layer that dries faster, stays comfortable longer, and performs across more conditions.

Your base layer is the first thing against your skin—and it directly affects comfort, moisture management, and temperature regulation all day long.

Product Care

Your Wool layer is a high performance piece of gear. It needs some extra attention to keep it performing at the highest level.

Please read through the care instructions below to ensure that you care for it properly:

Before Washing

  • Never wash your wool with anything with velcro or similar hook & loop characteristics.
  • Never wash your wool in a washing machine that has an agitator.
  • If your wool layer has a zipper, please zip it up completely to prevent it from snagging during the washing process.
  • If you cannot follow any of these prior instructions you should hand wash your product using the detergent and drying process described below.

The Wash & Dry Process

  1. Use a mild detergent like Dreft (for babies) or Nikwax (for technical gear).
  2. Choose Low Spin or Delicate wash.
  3. Choose Cold Wash & Cold Rinse (add extra rinse if possible).
  4. Hang dry until the product is completely dry.

Something from OV that isn't borderline flimsy in their quest for the ultralight & performance combo. These are stout and should be perfect for some frigid winter backpacking trips.

Size up

I regularly use Exofficio and Paka boxers and these are noticeably thicker & heavier.

Maybe they're best for winter/shoulder seasons?

My first impression is they are very well made, but noticed they tend to ride down in the back (maybe it's my body 🤷🏻‍♂️).

My usual size is XL, but I followed the sizing advice on this one and ordered the 3XL and the fit feels right (aside from low riding).

Not trail tested yet

I bought, wore for a day. Did not hike in them but on a hot day they were good at keeping temp lower than other everyday boxes.

Have not given it the true guy out hunting for 4 or 5 days where you wear regular then back to front then turn inside out and repeat with turn around and you are fresh for 4 days.

Seriously, I love every product I have bought from OV I'm sure these will be good in the field.

Kidd fit

The waist fits fine and the fabric feels comfortable next to skin but, the legs are so tight they’re unwearable.

Great-for-hiking boxers

I recently purchased my second pair of DragonWool Boxers. This purchase was based on my experience with my first pair which I recently wore on my Camino de Santiago (500 mile walk from France and across northern Spain) in all kinds of weather. They held up superbly unlike another brand which I wore only one day and left me badly chafed. My DragonWool Boxers were comfortable through it all, easy to care for, and fast drying. I loved them so much that I couldn't live with just one pair.

My third piece of dragonwool. Love them all. Fits as expected. Great for bike riding too.

Very good underwear

I really like these underwear but I gave it 4 vs 5 stars due to the fact that the back side of the underwear ride uncomfortably down my butt when ever I bend over. I have to pull them back up anytime I bend over so it’s annoying. Otherwise they are a great set of merino wool drawers. I’ve switched all of my underwear to merino wool for comfort reasons. The fit was true to size. I’m 5’11”, 200 lbs and wear size XL. I like the feel of the material and the length of then leg length. Will I buy another set, maybe, if they are on sale, because I really do like them!

falling pants

Nice looking but tend to slip down with movement as the waistband elastic is too weak, would not buy it again. one needs suspenders to use.

One multi-day wearing…

… and I’m pretty sold on these. I will probably buy a few more, but only after a couple more wearings, day-to-day normal use, and camp.

Can't win them all, good try.

Typical activity: Weekend warrior, hiking is usually 30ish miles over 3 days or so in 30-80 degree temps.

Overall: I was expecting a hiking underwear, but got a thicker warmer underwear that will be used as a sleeping base layer. These are too thick and constricting for me to hike in.

Pros:
The material and stitching is fantastic.
They are thicker and warmer than I was thinking they would be and I'll use them as a cold weather base layer at night to sleep in.

Cons:
They are thicker and warmer than I need for hiking.
The legs are too long for my liking, They stick out of the bottom of my shorts legs.
I might actually go up a size for them to be more comfortable. My usual size is a little snug.
Price is a bit high for what I will end up using these for. (warm base layer)
Back side is a bit short and pulls down when I squat. (probably due to them running a little small for me)

Boxers

So far these boxers look and feel top notch. Very comfortable and soft. This winter hiking and skiing will be the real test of course.
But I’m sure I’ll buy a second pair (different color) judging on what I’m seeing so far.
The problem with nylon or cotton shorts is that if they get wet or sweaty you will get chilled and clammy.
Not good for overnight hiking. So I’m looking forward to this winter on the Washington PCT.
Thanks OV.

The design missed the mark

I bought a pair of these with a Kickstarter package deal. I thought I would give them a try.

A few things I noticed:

1.) They weren't offered in black like most other outdoor underwear, therefore stains are much more visible. Not very appealing to re-wear on the trail.
2.) They were tight around the legs and the ball sack was open and airy, therefore they would be to hot to wear during summer because of the legs and not wick moisture from your sweaty balls.
3.) Based on the previous points, my use case for them is as base layer shorts. Base layer shorts are useful in 20-40F weather depending on activity level. If they were sold as base layer shorts I could give them 4 stars.
4.) If you roll up the legs and roll down the waist to transform them briefs, I found that the ability to wick moisture from my balls kept them dryer than any other briefs I have tried and the fabric was only slightly damp. I feel that if you had released dragon wool briefs they would be worthy of 5 stars and I would buy at least 7 pair. I hoped you would release dragon briefs, but I guess I am still waiting several years later.

So please release dragonwool briefs in black for men and women.

Fair but not great.

I will need more time on some hikes with them but they aren't as comfortable as the Smart Wool ones I have. Drop the price in half and it maybe a good deal.

Was Hoping for an Awesome Boxer

First off, I'm a big fan of Outdoor Vitals. I have two other OV products; the synthetic hoody jacket and pillow. Both are great and use them often. I had high expectations for the dragon wool boxers, which is why I purchased two. I have the same issue as mentioned in other reviews, not enough material in the back and too much in the front. Great length and very comfortable though, when dry. However, after a full day of hiking while backpacking, I feel like I'm wearing what feels like a wet diaper. They retain sweat and get baggy. Not sure, but may need less wool and more nylon/spandex.

Fatal flaw - backside is short

I think OV is doing some innovative work, but these boxers have one fatal flaw. The pros: stitching is excellent, material feels soft yet supportive, leg length seems long enough to not roll up while hiking, and the legs fit snug but not too constrictive and again will likely help in not bunching/rolling. I really like the idea of having a wool/nylon blend to help cut down on stink in the backcountry. For reference, my thighs are 27" in circumference, my waist is 35", and I ordered a size L.

I did not hike in these because of the below fit issue so cannot attest to the wicking and drying capability of the Dragonwool material. The material is thicker than what I've experienced in other sports boxers, but it's not a problem and might help with wicking and keeping you feeling dry.

The fatal flaw, as a couple other reviewers have noted, is that the back side of the boxers is cut too short. The fly is on one side, so I know that I'm not putting them on backwards, but when you pull the boxers up to your waist the back side is flush while there's a noticeable sag in the front side material, not a gap in the waist band itself but the front fabric. It's like the manufacturer in Vietnam got the rise reversed. When you bend over or crouch or kneel, the back side of the boxers pulls down. It's the strangest feeling.

I'm still a fan of OV, and I really hope that they get this cut/fit issue sorted out because I think these boxers could be great in the backcountry.

Some problems

Always looking for a comfortable pair of underwear for hiking that don't ride up and can take hiking and backpacking. I had very high hopes for these but alas they aren't perfect. There are a couple issues. The biggest one is the fit. Not sure what is going on but there doesn't seem to be enough material in the back. So, first of all it is a bit hard to get them to stay up in the back and then if I bend over instead of the material stretching they just go down. It is quite uncomfortable to feel the waistband migrating down. Second things is that this material is actually quite thick and they are quite warm so while they don't ride up my legs get warm wearing them and I feel the thickness against my pants over them. I also noticed I was sweating a bit more than usual when wearing them from the warmth. The sweating lead to chaffing which was weird as I usual experience chaffing when the legs ride up. Third thing I noticed is that they fit rather tightly on my legs. So much so that I actually felt my legs a bit constricted. The material didn't feel like it was very giving or stretchy and compressed my thighs. Final thing is that these are some expensive underwear! Not cheap so I am glad I only purchased one pair to try out. Don't think I will be buying any more which is too bad as I was looking forward to them based on the design and hype.

Excellent Briefs

I wore an XL pair for a long hike with a heavy pack in weather with a wind chill of around 27 degrees. I had two layers over them - the DragonWool thermals and then the Satu pants. I kept warm and did not sweat at all under the briefs. With other briefs, and other leggings, I usually sweat a little. They fit very well. They did not bunch or chaff, and even though I had two layers over them, they fit so well that I did not notice them at all. They performed just as expected, which is a rare quality in hiking clothing today. When I ordered them, my size was on the borderline between a L or an XL. I selected the XL because I did not want them to be tight under layers.
