Product Care

Spray off both the outside and inside of your backpack frequently.

To further prevent wear and tear, try to keep your backpack out of the dirt by hanging your backpack up where possible.

If you really feel the need to get soap involved, get a tote or fill up your tub with water, and put just a little bit of that NikWax Tech Wash we mentioned before in there.

Soak your backpack in that mixture, scrub it a little bit, and the make sure it gets completely rinsed off.

Once again, spraying off and cleaning your backpack is something that should be done frequently!

Really good travel backpack

I’ve had my KotaUL for two years and have nothing but praise for this pack. The pockets are well thought out and love the lightweight and fit for me, I’m 5’10” and 40” waist. The harness system fits me well all but the waist belt and that is why the four stars instead of five. I remedy that by purchasing a shadow light hip belt, which now makes it an excellent backpacking pack. I am surprised that in all the reviews that complain about the hip belt didn’t do the same thing. I now have a trail ready pack that has great hip belt pockets. The hip belt Velcro’s the same way the original belt attached only better because it is one piece. I love the water bottle pockets for there smart design, they don’t take room from the main compartment and the zippers make those same pockets for other uses other than just water bottles you can use the exterior straps that can be unattached to hold an umbrella or hiking poles. It’s not a good pack for carrying a laptop but my remedy for that is I carry a personal carry backpack that slides under the seat in front of me on the plane.

The most versatile packs

The most versatile packs. We've had a couple of these for some time now and love them so much we bought more. We've taken them on a serious expedition in Torres del Paine, the Chilean Patagonia. And we've taken them backpacking in the Brazilian jungle. It is Suzie's favorite backpack. They are fun as a carryon when traveling by plane. They are neat and organized with all the pockets and packing cubes. They work great deep in the backcountry as well as an overnight stay in the city on our urban adventures.

Unboxing The Kotal UL. How does it compare?

As a seasoned business traveler with well over 2 million miles in the air, I've learned that the right carry-on is the most valuable tool you can own. Based on the video review, here's my assessment of the Outdoor Vitals Kota UL pack and how it compares to my other quiver of business packs.

Detailed Review Summary
The pack's primary strength is its versatility, for my use case...a "business traveler" who might also want to do a day hike while on the road [00:26].

Compared to mycurrent setup, which includes a small roller bag and an REI Trail 25, the Kota UL offers a lighter, more streamlined profile [06:19]. Its sleek design is less likely to snag than the REI pack [01:54]. The Kota also appears to have superior organizational features, including four grab handles [03:40], a three-fold top compartment, and a bottom zipper with a locking function for added security—a feature I'd appreciate in a crowded terminal [04:50]. The protected laptop sleeve [05:49] is a critical feature that shows smart design.

However, the Kota UL doesn't quite match the durability of the Ogio travel pack [02:19] or my winter ski pack. The zippers and shoulder straps on the Kota feel "thin" compared to the "burly" zippers on the Ogio and the more robust support on his other bags [06:26]. While the Ogio is a great pure business bag with a clamshell design for packing cubes, it's not built for any sort of outdoor use [02:36]. In contrast, the Kota UL attempts to bridge this gap, but I must express concern about its long-term durability.

5 Key Takeaways
A True Hybrid Pack: The Kota UL is purpose-built for the business professional who wants a single pack for both work trips and light outdoor activities like day hikes [00:40].

Smart Security and Organization: The pack includes a great anti-theft locking zipper on the bottom [04:56] and a thoughtful laptop sleeve that protects your device from being damaged when you set the bag down [05:49].

Lightweight and Sleek: It's a lighter, more streamlined alternative to traditional business packs, and its sleek design makes it less cumbersome for travel [01:54].

Durability Concerns: The zippers and shoulder straps feel thin, raising questions about whether they can withstand the rigors of heavy, frequent use over time [06:26].

Quality Control Issue: The reviewer's pack was missing the side straps for attaching hiking poles [04:04]. While likely a one-off issue, it's a reminder to check your pack upon arrival.

Next - I am going to load it up from my trip this week (wanted to bring the Kota - but shipping was delayed) - looking forward to reporting back after months of use.

First Impressions & Comparision to my quiver...

Use case: male business traveler who wants the ability to recreate some while in the Rocky Mountains & Western US. Here is the context of my situation and other packs in my quiver. Final judgement about straps, load, and zippers to come after more use. This video, "Part 2: Kota UL by #OutdoorVitals Adventure Pack. Unboxing & first impressions," provides a user's initial review and impressions of the Kota UL adventure pack, specifically focusing on its configuration for business and blended travel. The reviewer, a nearly 60-year-old male, details his typical packing for business trips, including toiletries, business attire, and tech. He highlights features like the snug fit of a Yeti bottle in a side pocket [01:03] and the dedicated space for a Surface Pro and tech bags [02:42]. He notes the zippers can be challenging when the pack is fully loaded [02:11] and expresses a slight disappointment about missing straps for external gear [01:19]. The pack weighs 18 lbs with his typical load, and he suggests a maximum comfortable weight of 22 lbs [00:44]. The reviewer concludes by expressing excitement for further use and a future review after three months of experience, recommending the pack for its functionality, especially for those who blend business and recreation travel, despite its higher price point compared to alternatives like the REI Trail 40 [03:32].

5 Takeaways:
Versatile for Blended Travel ✈️: The Kota UL is presented as ideal for individuals who combine business and recreational travel, offering good functionality for both uses, particularly in regions like the Rocky Mountains [03:12].

Capacity and Weight ⚖️: The pack comfortably holds an 18 lbs load, with a recommended maximum of 22 lbs for optimal user experience [00:44].

Thoughtful Internal Organization 🎒: It features dedicated spaces for a Surface Pro and tech bags, along with quick-access pockets for essential items like eye wipes, earplugs, and a passport [01:41].

Minor Drawbacks Identified 🤏: The reviewer noted that zippers can be difficult to operate when the pack is fully loaded, and there were missing external straps that would enhance its outdoor configuration [01:19].

Value Proposition 💰: While more expensive than some competitors, the Kota UL offers greater functionality, making it a worthwhile investment for those who leverage its business and recreational features...just not overnight backpacking for my use case. [03:32].

We loved the backpacks that my wife and I got for this trip. We plan on using them for future trips and had a lot of people in the airports asking us about them.

Kotaul on the Portuguese Camino

I took the Kotaul (after much searching for a carry on bag for international flights) on my first camino. I hiked 200 miles up the Portuguese and Spanish coast to Santiago de Compostela, average about 12.5 miles a day, finished in 16 days. The bag really worked well, with just minor issues. Im not sure if this is really meant for these kinds of trips but the bag held up fantastic for a 3 month trip too Europe, lots of buses and trains. Padding is a bit light and agree with others that shoulder straps and waist belt could be a bit more robust. Since waist belt is velcro attached, there could be a heftier replacement version as an add on. Packed a bit too heavy (named her Wee Heavy for the beer) about 26 lbs. Im 61 and and made it work. Id recommend the pack for sure

After multiple delays my order was lost completely

This was never even delivered. Total fail. Why did I even get a review. Everyone I know won't shop here because of how bad this company is.

Unmatched versatility

Very lightweight. Extremely versatile. Rucked with 45lb plate inside using compression straps no problem. Going to use for travel, rucking, hiking, EDC to office, you name it! I do want extra compression straps though. The long ones are great. Would want to use them inside and outside if needed simultaneously. This bag is superior to my last Goruck Rucker 4.0 and my 5.11 Rush 72 bag:) In so many ways.

Best Travel Backpack Ever

I got this a year ago. It is absolutely amazing. It carries 20 lbs very comfortably. So much so that I'll probably do a backpacking-camping trip with it this Fall b/c I can't find any of the packs I want (OV or other) in my size right now. I loaded it up with my camping and backpacking gear yesterday to check it out and it feels great.

I see that it's "not to be restocked". Is there a replacement coming? 🤔 I hope so!

Love it!

This bag is the right combination of features for me. Large capacity with a high likelihood of being carry on compliant for most trips. And the light weight is huge especially when I'm carrying a larger amount of gear.

Great travel backpack, but one key flaw

I’d been wanting this travel backpack for about a year and finally pulled the trigger last month. Was so excited to get it, after doing lots of online research of many travel packs. I was very impressed with the bag - great layout of pockets, nice shoulder straps/pads, overall great design. But unfortunately I was surprised when I tried on the hip belt (which comes with it). I was barely able to connect the buckle and it left practically no room to tighten the straps. I’m an average 35-36 waist, so I was shocked that the hip belt was so small. I contacted OV and they said there wasn’t any alternative size or any other solution. So after all that time and excitement, I ended up returning the pack. :-(

Best All-Around Backpack. Period.

I've been using mine now ever since the kickstarter campaign ended 2+ years ago, and I cannot say enough good things. I used it daily for over a year while commuting to work through the all of the elements. I've taken it around the world on vacations (its definitely seen a few airports). And I've stuffed it completely in both volume, as well as lugging 40 lbs of equipment, more times than I can count. The storage layout is amazing. The light, yet very tough, materials are incredible. The frame is solid. The load lifters are the best load lifters I have ever tried. The straps are super comfy. I really have nothing negative to say about this bag. If you want to know my credentials, I am associated with the military, and I am a bit rough on things. Additionally, I'm a gear q****, and I have so many bags that even my bags have bags. This one is definitely one you need in your inventory.

Best Travel Pack Ever. Perfect size. Extremely comfortable.

I came across this pack just in time to get it before a couple of weeks traveling in Italy. A nearly perfect travel backpack: extremely comfortable, carry on size, excellent pockets, grab straps on all four sides, and easy-to-stow shoulder straps and belt. It's rare that a piece of equipment exceeds expectations and this does. The long inner pockets were perfect for my second pair of shoes. An outstanding piece of equipment!

Just what I needed!

I travel a fair amout on planes and need to replace my suit case due to rats in my garage. This does everything I need and is very well constructed. I'm 5'9 and fits me well and carries weight well. There is plenty of storage and I may end up using it for day hikes as well. Stellar product!

Good over all. Just needs a little something for international travel.

The overall construction of the bag is fantastic! For domestic travel I would definitely recommend the bag. It fits nicely in the overhead of the US domestic airlines. I really do like the long pockets on the side both inside and out. Perfect for anything. I can see my treking poles fitting nicely into the inside pockets. All the mesh netting pockets keep things neatly organized. The large front pocket works nicely for things that need to be accessed quickly. The depth of the backpack (from front to the back) is a little smaller than I would like, but definitely usable. The straps that are included to keep me inside together work well. The shoulders straps are very comfortable and the lift loaders can be a back saver.
I recently took it on an international trip and it worked fine. However, I had to remove the metal frame in order to make it fit to the 21 inches for some of the international airlines that I took. If I hadn't been able to squish it down that 1 inch would have had to check it. The whole reason I bought it was not to have to check my bag. I'm team carry-on. The only other real concern that I have with a bag is securing my stuff in the bag when I leave the bag in my hotel room. With the four zippers on the main compartment, securing the bag with luggage locks is nearly impossible unless you have 4 or more locks. The poor bag would look like Houdini's straight jacket with all the locks. Even then, the strings used on the zippers would be able to be cut easily. This is a concern for me. This lack of ways to secure the bag also concerns me if I had to check it. The zippers are really well made. It unzipping is not a concern.
I really do love the Outdoor vitals gear. All their gear is made with really high quality. This backpack is no exception. I just think this needs just a bit of tweaking for international travel.

My new EDC bag

I've been looking for a couple years for the ideal EDC bag and I've landed on the Kota after testing probably 10 bags. I wanted something that I'd carry every day into the office, as well as on trail. This bag has the best feature set for all of that, IMO. There are a couple things I wish it had, such as an exterior mesh "stuff" pocket and at least one hip-belt pocket. Despite being an ultralight bag, it seems to carry heavier loads just fine with no discomfort. Really great bag.

Could the Kotaul travel/adventure backpack fit underneath a an airplane seat?

Outdoor Vitals

It can, but it does depend on your specific airline as well as how full you've packed it. I recommend checking with your preferred airline to get their recommendations for under seat luggage sizs and comparing againt our published packed dimensions of the KotaUL to give the best possible chance of fitting your needs.
