What are the Skyline Trail Shorts best used for?

The Skyline Trail Shorts are built for hot-weather hiking, ultralight backpacking, thru-hiking, trail running, fast hiking, travel, gym use, and other high-output activities. They are designed to give you the breathability and mobility of running shorts with more trail-ready protection than basic athletic shorts.

Are the Skyline Trail Shorts better for hiking or running?

They are designed for both, but with a backcountry-first focus. Compared to typical running shorts, the Skyline Trail Shorts offer more coverage and trail protection. Compared to traditional hiking shorts, they are lighter, flexible, more breathable, and less bulky, making them ideal for long miles and high-output movement.

How do the Skyline Trail Shorts fit?

The Skyline Trail Shorts use a streamlined performance fit designed to reduce excess fabric, bulk, and drag while still allowing full range of motion. The 4-way stretch woven polyester and full mesh crotch gusset help the shorts move with your body instead of restricting movement on climbs, scrambles, and long trail days.

Are the Skyline Trail Shorts breathable?

Yes. The shorts use targeted jersey knit mesh in high-heat zones, including the full crotch gusset and side mesh panels, to increase airflow where it matters most. This helps regulate heat and moisture during hot-weather hiking, trail running, backpacking, and other high-output activity.

Do the Skyline Trail Shorts dry quickly?

Yes. The Skyline Trail Shorts are made with lightweight, quick-drying, moisture-wicking polyester fabrics. They are designed to dry quickly after sweat, light rain, stream crossings, or washing, helping reduce moisture buildup, odor, and chafing during long days on trail.

Are the Skyline Trail Shorts water-resistant?

The main fabric is treated with DWR, which helps shed light moisture and splashes. They are not waterproof and should not be treated like rain gear, but the quick-drying fabric and DWR finish make them well-suited for sweat, light precipitation, water crossings, and changing trail conditions.

What pockets do the Skyline Trail Shorts have?

The Skyline Trail Shorts have 2 hip pockets, plus an internal key/card pocket inside the right hip pocket. The pocket setup keeps the shorts simple and lightweight while still giving you space for small essentials. For valuable items during aggressive movement, a pack pocket, running belt, or zipped storage may be more secure.

Love these. Works for women too

I’m loving these shorts. They don’t ride up my legs and they dry quickly. Great in the hot and humid Southern Ohio Summer

Update to first review

Sorry for the second review, (Since you cannot edit reviews). Here is how I fixed them. Search for B07VX314CY on Amazon, and replace the drawstring with this. Makes them so much better. Now I can simply stretch them out and pull down to do a Number 1 on the trail. OV, if you intend to fix these shorts in the future with an elastic cord, I would suggest putting the holes the drawstring comes out of on the outside of the waistband.
With the elastic cord, I rate these as 5 stars. As they come with the non-elastic drawstring, I rate them at 3 stars. I will be ordering a second pair, now that I know they will work great after the fix.

Trash as sold, until you fix them. Then they are pretty good shorts

As sold, these suck…but I was able to make them usable. I received them last week. I ordered 3xl, as my waist is 41.5 inches, and the 3XL on their chart is for waist size 40-43. For you weight counters, the 3XL weighs 6.6 ounces. The elastic in the waistband is so weak that it won’t hold them on your waist by itself. I’m not sure why OV even used such weak elastic in the waistband. Suggestion to OV…either use better elastic, or eliminate it since its useless as it is. The drawstring, a simple non-elastic string, is what you use to tighten them. Once you have it tied off, using the bathroom means you either have to just strain/stretch the string as you pull them down, or you have to untie the string (there is no fly). This makes them not a good choice for male hikers. I have fixed this issue partially, and the issue of lack of elastic. I pulled out the string that comes with it, and replaced it with elastic cord, with a cord lock to hold it in place. Works MUCH better than the stock string (see pics). I do like the liner. It keeps everything in place. The weight can’t be beat, although I have a 15 year old pair of running shorts that weigh 7.3 ounces, which may beat this out as my shorts of choice for the CDT. The main reason for going for these is the liner. If in my tests the liner does its job, then no need for underwear, and I’ll order a second pair as a spare on trail.
Most of the time I love OV products. I’ll be using the Shadowlight, Tushar rain jacket, and sun hoodie on the CDT next year…and maybe these shorts. I just wish they were designed better. As they come from OV, they are trash, but with a little work (and expense…cost me $8), they are pretty good shorts.
Last thought…others have complained about the lack of a rear pocket. Doesn’t bother me any, as I never use a rear pocket when hiking. My wallet is in my pack. I’d bet most hikers are the same. It would, however, come in handy when you are in trail towns.

I’m afraid the shorts are a little short

First off, we are huge OV fans. 90% of my gear is from Outdoor Vitals. I was excited about these shorts as they appear perfect for summer in the description on paper. Sadly, they fall “short”, pardon the pun, in many ways.
We work & live on the Appalachian Trail (NC) and I tried these shorts for five straight days and some good southern heat.
First off, the sizing is not normal sizing for OV products. I am a classic large at 6 ft, 185 lbs and always wear a perfect Large. These large shorts run small and hike up too much.
Next, no back pockets? WTF…why? No wallet pocket, no cell pocket, no knife pocket. It doesn’t make sense to me, especially if they are to be hiking shorts. They are more like a pair of swim shorts, which I will retire this pair to be. But without pockets, fitting too tight, + no belt loops, I certainly can’t wear them as casual shorts or hiking.
So there you are, I have a new pair of (pricey) swim shorts. Awesome light weight and great material. We can’t say enough about the fabric but not as a hiking short.
I still love OV. 😎

Nice material but miss on the sizing

No matter the size they still seam tight in the leg and too loose upper. Needs longer inseam. Nice material and breathability.

I can't recommend these shorts....

I've been a fan of OV and I really wanted to like these shorts but they don't meet the performance that I've experienced with other brands.

As far as the design, they are comfortable shorts for sure, no doubt about that! But here are the factors that were disappointing for me:
- The waistband cord is some sort of cotton material that doesn't have any stretch and is way too long. It just feels cheap and not well thought out.
- For trail running shorts, I am quite surprised that they have two side pockets - I've never used them once as they aren't secure and will bounce around. I've been a trail ultrarunner for 15 years and I've never had a trail shorts that didn't have more secure pockets on the back of the shorts.
- I bought these in May and its now August, and they have already developed holes in the crotch materials. They have not been torn and have only been used for trail running but were not covered under the warranty. I can't recommend shorts that don't last even one season.

Again, I really wanted these to be my new favorite running shorts but I'll have to keep looking!

Nice Shorts

Nice shorts exactly what I’m looking for. Light weight decent pocket size but crotch is a bit small. Ordered size L.

Good shorts that are almost there

These shorts are super lightweight and comfortable. The only two negatives I have are the pockets and the drawstring. For the pockets, I would like to either see a rear zippered pocket or zippers on the side pockets so there was some security. For the drawstring, it is just a bit lightweight to keep the shorts up if there is anything in your pockets.
