What temperature range is the Ventus Active Hoodie best for?

The Ventus Active Hoodie is designed for cool-to-cold movement and is generally comfortable from about 25–50°F, depending on your activity level, base layers, weather, and personal warmth needs. It works especially well when you are hiking, backpacking, climbing, biking, snowshoeing, or moving consistently in cold conditions.

Is the Ventus Hoodie warm enough to replace a fleece?

For many users, yes. The Ventus is designed to be lighter, warmer, more wind-resistant, and more packable than many traditional fleece mid layers. It uses 25 g/m² 3DeFX active stretch insulation, body-mapped insulation placement, and perforated underarm vents to provide warmth while still helping regulate heat during movement.

What makes the Ventus different from a normal insulated jacket?

The Ventus is an active insulation layer, not a traditional static puffy. It is built for movement, using 3DeFX active stretch insulation that stretches with your body and allows heat to escape when you are working hard, while still lofting for warmth when you slow down. That makes it better suited for hiking, climbing, biking, and other high-output activities than many standard insulated jackets.

Is the Ventus Hoodie waterproof?

No. The Ventus is water-resistant, not waterproof. It uses a 20D ripstop nylon shell with a DWR treatment and lightweight coatings that help it shed light moisture and act as a windbreaker, but it should be paired with a rain shell in sustained rain, wet snow, or prolonged storm conditions.

Is the Ventus Hoodie wind-resistant?

Yes. The Ventus uses a lightweight coated 20D ripstop nylon shell that helps it function as a light windbreaker while still allowing targeted airflow through its body-mapped design and perforated underarm vents. This makes it more protective in wind than many fleece layers, without trapping as much heat as a less breathable shell.

How breathable is the Ventus during high-output activity?

The Ventus is built specifically for breathability during movement. It combines perforated underarm vents, targeted insulation placement, breathable 3DeFX insulation, and stretch fabric to help dump excess heat where your body typically runs hottest. This helps reduce the need to constantly stop and change layers during climbs or cold-weather movement.

How much does the Ventus Hoodie weigh and how small does it pack?

The Ventus weighs about 7 oz and packs down to roughly the size of a grapefruit into its hidden inner pocket. That makes it easy to carry on backpacking trips, fastpacking missions, travel days, day hikes, and any cold-weather outing where space and weight matter.

How should the Ventus Active Hoodie fit?

The Ventus has an athletic fit and should sit fairly close to the body so the active insulation can perform properly. It is designed to fit over a base layer or light shirt, not over bulky layers. If you want a looser casual fit or plan to wear thicker layers underneath, consider sizing up. Tall sizes add approximately 2 inches in sleeve length and 2 inches in torso length.

Where does the Ventus fit in a layering system?

The Ventus is designed to sit between a base layer and an outer shell. In cold conditions, wear it as an active midlayer under a shell or rain jacket. In mild or dry conditions, it can be worn as a standalone outer layer. It is especially useful when you need warmth, breathability, wind resistance, and low weight in one piece.

What activities is the Ventus Hoodie best for?

The Ventus is best for ultralight backpacking, thru-hiking, day hiking, fastpacking, mountain biking, hunting, snowshoeing, climbing, travel, and cold-weather adventure. It is designed for people who want more warmth than a simple fleece or hoodie, but do not want to overheat or carry unnecessary weight while moving.

Slim tall almost perfect 30-40deg outer layer.

Fits amazingly well. Large tall I am 6‘4“ 42 inch chest 36 inch sleeves and I have never found anything that fits better! Would be five stars if the hood was just about one inch longer in the neck area. The hood fits well, but it’s hard to turn my head, the fabric gets tight.
I’ve been doing some testing and have determined this is a good active outer layer when the temperatures are mid 30s to mid 40s with just a tshirt base layer. Nothing crazy just hiking with a backpack getting a little cardio on the uphill, but then cooling down on the downhill.

Great feel and weight

Great mid layer.

The Ventus hoodie has worked great as a mid layer under my heavier winter coat when the temps ranged down below 32'f. I've also worn it as a stand alone hoodie when the temperatures were in the 40s'f. I only wish it had pockets when used as a stand alone jacket.

I found the sizing a bit confusing. Utilizing my height, weight, body composition and age seemed a bit problematic. It was suggested I get a 2XL but I feel an XL would have been more appropriate. But since I recently received another product from Outdoor Vitals in Xl that was too small I went with the suggested 2XL for this. I'm not dissapointed since I could fit this over another mid layer fleece jacket today and was perfectly warm despite the 15'f wind chill we have been experiencing.

Loved mine so much I ordered one for my husband!

I received my Ventus hoodie and immediately wore it on a hike to the Dana Plateau. It was quite breezy and temps were in the high 40s. I was extremely comfortable wearing this jacket and your Altitude sun hoodie. I loved the breathability, warmth and fit. The packability and lightweight was also nice because I preferred to hike with a running vest and this fits perfectly. I took it on two other hikes with the same good result so I bought my husband one. He wore his on a hike last weekend and loved it also! I might buy myself a second one and one for my hiking partner Deb!! Love your products!!

AMAZING!

I wore... I LIVED in the VENTUS ultralight hoodie during a recent trip on the Allagash River. The weather was less than ideal with rain each day, temps in the lower 40's during the day, and winds gusting up to 20mph. Great as a layer, this hoodie kept me comfortable, warm, not too stinky due to the venting, and was flexible under a rain layer. I AM ALWAYS COLD - wearing this I was comfortable. I will by purchasing another as a gift!

WORTH IT-JUST BUY IT!!!

The Ventus is one of the best pieces of outdoor apparel gear I've ever owned. The The attention to detail with fabric, the hood, drawstring at hem, and underarm venting make this second to none. After owning and using it several times and having owned two different sizes, anyone doing activity outside should own the Ventus.

SIZING: I HAVE OWNED A LARGE WHICH YOU CAN SEE IN PICTURE THAT MY SON IS WEARING IN BLACK.

I'M WEARING THE NEWER COLOR SAGE GRAY IN XL.

I'm 6 ft. About 210lbs(45), broad chest and probably between sizes in the large and extra large, but I would much rather have the extra large and feel like I can move with more range of motion.

Versatile and lightweight

This is a very versatile and lightweight insulating layer. I originally purchased the Ventus for hiking but I've used it on my daily dog walks in 35 degree weather, as well as some morning runs with temperatures below 15 degrees. The medium fits perfectly (I'm 5'-3", 140lbs, 34" chest, 28" waist and 38.5" hip). It fits close enough to the skin to keep me warm with just a t-shirt or long sleeve base layer, but there's room for a thicker grid fleece layer if additional warmth is needed. The Ventus is extremely packable and I plan to take it on all day hiking and backpacking trips.

Great Jacket for Active People

So far I have only worn it a few times, as it is finally getting cool enough to wear it here in the mountains of CO, but I love it! I love how it fits and feels. I’m 6’3 and 220 lbs, so not always the easiest to fit, butI got the XL and this thing is so comfy. It keeps me warm at cool temps, but still gets a little warm in the arms on my morning trail runs, which doesn’t surprise me. This morning it was 41 and it felt great for the first few miles and then because of how light weight it is I barely noticed it on my waist when I took it off and tied it around, though next time I’ll probably shove it in my vest pocket. I can’t wait to see how it does as winter gets closer! My only challenge is the no pockets, but I understand why they did it and feel like once I get used to it, then it won’t be an issue, I’m just so used to all my pull overs having pockets.

Nice jacket

I have been using the Ventus here in New Hampshire since getting it this winter. I am 5'9" and got the XL, which fits well and allows me to layer two base layers underneath. The Ventus feels like a lightweight fluff of poof. I was skeptical of how much warmth it would offer and thought it might be best in warmer seasons. However I am using it on active days for walks and hikes. I like how it stays aloft. I like the armpit tiny holes that vent some body heat. I like the nicely fitted hood. I like the length in body and sleeves. I like the deep front zip. It certainly is packable. It offers decent wind protection and lightweight warmth over base layers but it not a substitute for my big down puffy jackets. I wish it had a loop at the inside neck so I could hang it on my coat pegs instead of a hanger. I wish it had a pocket but I understand it is more ultralight without. I like the sleek appearance of it in the black color. Overall it is quite nice and I look forward to using it in the shoulder season, where it might be at its most useful.

Great Midlayer

I do recommend sizing up for this one I normally wear an XL but found a 2XL fits better in this case. I wore this on a snowy hike in South Dakota in below 30 degree weather with just a long sleeve wicking shirt under it. Stayed toasty warm and felt well vented. I have my full review linked below in my YouTube. Excellent product! Highly recommend. You cant beat the weight to warmth ratio!

Best I’ve Experienced to Date

The Ventus Hoodie kept me dry in the rain. The rain beaded up and ran off all the while keeping me the perfect temperature for 10 mile hike in 50 degree weather with only a t-shirt underneath. Material is excellent. Weight is so light. Packable. I love it. Best upper outerwear I’ve ever owned.

Versatile, lightweight, well designed

I have worn this only as an outer layer on summer day hikes at altitude (10k+) when the temps drop and wind pucks up. It has served well as wind jacket and light rain jacket.
It packs reasonably compactly into its inner stretch pocket, so tucks away into a daypack or lumbar pack as emergency layer.
The pit vents seem to help with moisture and cooling when temps rise a bit.
The fit is almost two sizes small. Every other outdoor garment I wear (and I have many from MH, NF, Marmot, Orvis, OR, et al.) is a medium. OV’s size guide says I should order XL. I bought an L instead. It fits snugly over just a t-shirt or lightweight hoodie.
Not sure the exterior material would survive rock abrasion on climbs or heavy bushwhacking, but it does fine on trail hikes, under shoulder straps, and other ordinary use.

So Impressed!

The Ventus Hoodie is such great piece in my backpack. Light, cozy, fits great and does the job very effectively. I was chilled and just needing an extra layer…I put on the Ventus hoodie and my whole outlook changed. I immediately started to warm up to just the perfect temperature to keep working hard and being very comfortable while doing it. Highly recommend!

Best versatility of any mid-layer I have ever tried

Have used the Venus hoodie on everything from skiing, ice skating to hiking. Recently spent four days hiking in Colorados front range between 6,000 and 14,000 ft (Mt Blue Sky) perfect lager to add or subtract and the light weight and pack ability are great.

Great jacket! Needs pockets and upside.

I've come to appreciate this Jacket the more I use it. The lightweight non-bulky feel is great. I find myself using it more and more. I so not backpack very often (once a year), but do end up using this for other outdoor activities.

I'd likely buy another if any of my 'cons' were attended to: 1) Pockets!! I'm ready to see my own in. Absolutely needed. 2) Thank you for the 'tall' sizes! BUT an XXXL tall is unavailable and sizing up is already necessary just to get into it (I had to return the first because I was afraid I'd rip it trying to get in). 3) Did I mention pockets?
