Merino vs. Synthetic - Which Is Better?

Stronger Than Traditional Merino

Merino vs. Synthetic - Which Is Better?

Synthetic tops excel in extreme heat and fast drying, but they tend to retain odor and feel less comfortable over time. The Tern combines natural odor resistance, temperature regulation, and improved durability to create a more versatile layer for multi-day use.

If your priority is comfort, versatility, and extended wear, the Tern is the better choice.

What is the Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Tee best used for?

The Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Tee is best used as a sun shirt and base layer hybrid for backpacking, thru-hiking, trail running, travel, everyday wear, and year-round layering. It works well as a standalone shirt in warm weather, a base layer under insulation in cool conditions, and an all-day layer when conditions change throughout the day.

Is the Tern Tee good for hot weather and sun protection?

Yes. The Tern Tee is designed for warm weather, exposed sun, and high-output movement. Its ultralight 115 GSM merino blend helps manage moisture and temperature, with a UPF 36+ rating for sun protection. It may not feel as cool as the thinnest synthetic sun shirts in extreme heat, but it offers better odor control and comfort for multi-day wear.

Is the Tern durable enough for backpacking?

Yes, but with the right expectations. The Tern uses NuYarn™ construction, which wraps merino fibers around a synthetic core to improve durability, stretch, and shape retention compared to traditional merino wool. It is built for real backpacking and outdoor use, but it is still an ultralight merino-blend layer, so some pilling or wear can occur with backpack straps or abrasion over time.

Shirt pills & shreds easily

We got two of these shirts for a hike on the AV1 in Italy backpacking for 8 days. The first one we washed on delicate in a garmet bag. Wore around the house for maybe an hour. It had weird wear stretch marks after washing it on cold, delicate. And pulled pulling. Odd. Outdoor Vitals was kind & replaced it. However, the replacement we took on the 70 mile AV1 hike. Bad idea. The Skyline 30 fast pack straps (which we also got from OV) tore and pilled the shirt on the lower back areas in about 8 hours. The shirt fit well, men’s medium on a 175lb 6’2 man. It is smooth and does not smell after hiking, and it dries fast. But the durable factor is definitely not there. Do not recommend for anything active. Also, Skyline 30 bag also tore up the back of a 100% wool shirt as well on the trip, so we do acknowledge part of the wear can be just the rough straps on the fast pack. But this shirt was having pilling and stretching marks before we put a backpack on it.

Excellent shirt

Wore this shirt and another just like it to Colorado backpacking for a week. It got smelly (should've given it a creek bath) but was cool/warm when I needed it. I layered it with the wool hoodie was awesome. (not totally Wool though just FYI only 63%)

Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Tee

Sized larger than expected. Wish I had sized down personally. Wore for 2 days earlier this week on a 15 mile hike. Little disappointed that it is already showing wear and pulls where my sternum straps make contact with it. Granted, it is Merino, so not the most durable fabric but I would have expected a little longer before it showed wear. Also - I think it may be because it is a blend, but it definitely did not resist stink. Smelled quite a bit after 2 days. However, very comfortable and wicks well which is why I bought it in the first place. Just might try another brand next time to see if there is a difference.

One of my favorite Tees

One of my favorite tees, super light and handles moisture like no other. With most of ov gear the durability is there but imo not going to last as long as your average synthetic or cotton tee.

Not very durable

I recently purchased the shirt and have worn it on two hikes. The sizing was accurate as an XL was recommended and it fits great. After normal wear and tear on the first hike, I noticed some slight pilling as others have mentioned in the chest area where it comes in contact with my pack straps. However, my second time wearing it, it got caught on a fingernail and instead of "just" pilling, my fingernail managed to rip a hole in the material. I would not recommend this shirt for anything strenuous or anything but perfect conditions where nothing will touch it.

The feel

The Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Tee is an incredibly comfortable shirt!! I like my tees loose and this one hangs wonderfully on my 'a bit too plump mid-section'. It will be interesting to see how it holds up to washing. I know I have to care for it differently than my regular cotton tees. I love the soft, light comfort of merino wool.

Tight

A bit tight, was expecting it though when it only goes up to 3xl and for some reason they think everyone likes tight clothing going with the athletic fit

Excellent hiking shirt!

Wore this shirt for the first time today on a 4 mile hike with a pack. My back got very sweaty, but I found the shirt to be extremely soft, stretchy, and it dried quickly. The shirt seems to maintain its shape very well which has been a problem with many of the merino shirts I’ve worn in the past, especially the collars. I will likely buy more. Just wish they weren’t so expensive, but you get what you pay for. Nuyarn is amazing, and I highly recommend!

Perfect

I have two REI T-shirts that I bought which have the Raglan sleeves and another factor is the seam on the sides is offset. REI doesn’t make those shirts anymore. I really like the turn T-shirt. I prefer wool which it is and it has the same Raglan design for the seams. A perfect shirt for a backpacker.

Great!

Light, very comfortable, and cool. I am impressed! I did run into some threads snagging when bushwhacking/fly fishing while on a trip, but this is not designed for that, and it’s not holed or anything. I will probably pick up a second one in the future!

worked well but sizing was off

wore it as a base layer during a rainy hike and it got very wet but didn't hold onto the water. i was able to wring out everything else I was wearing but the shirt didn't hold onto enough water to wring out. I normally wear a medium but didn't want a super snug fit so i ordered large and it was really baggy. i would have guessed an XL or XXL based on other clothes. surprised me, especially since the sizing guide listed it as one step above compression fit , i would have figured it would not have been that baggy.

Decent performance, great weight, poor durability

I brought this tee-shirt, along with a merino blend shirt from a different brand, with me, brand new, on a month long backpacking trip in Europe.

The pros to this shirt are 1) the sizing. I’m a 34 chest and the XS fit me as it should (something very few brands succeed in), 2) the performance is very good… however I have not tried it in weather above 70° F on a trip. (I was dealing with wet, damp, and dry weather with temperatures on different days from 70° to 45°F). 3) the weight, very light weight 4) the range and variety of color options (though I would like a black version and a tan version) 5) reasonably inexpensive (specially if your a member) for a mention wool blend shirt. 6) it’s comfortable.

There is one major con however: durability. After one week or less of use there was major pilling in all the areas contacted by my backpack (back, shoulder strap area and hip belt area) which is inconveniently not covered by the warranty. I’m sorry but, I don’t care how wonderful something preforms, if it doesn’t last longer than a week (or longer than a few years) with normal use within the parameters it was made for, I can’t in good conscience recommend it to a friend, or justify getting another one. Now it is still wearable, although it doesn’t look presentable, but I can’t trust it for future trips, if it’s in the state it’s in after a month could I trust it mot to completely fail me on a future trip? In contrast the shirt from the other brand preformed very similarly, and there was no pilling, wearing or otherwise although worn more often throughout the month of backpacking. I would trust that shirt again on a future trip.

Now, I have a disclaimer, this was the old blend. I think it was merino-poly? I have not tryed the new one. I’m not going to lie, im a little scared to rely on it. When I purchase something I expect longevity from that thing, especially if it’s pricy. And although their tern is less expensive than many, its price is still nothing to shake a stick at. So the few terns I have bought been relegated to house shirts for the summer. Other brand will go backpacking and or traveling with me. I hope the new blend will last several years before showing wear rather than several days. I’m sure I’ll muster up the courage to try it eventually and after my budget recovers. Sorry OV, I like your stuff and trust a lot of it, but this product simply didn’t make the cut. I can’t recommend the tern in the old blend.

A good base layer

I bought the original term sun hoodie when it came out and liked it but thought it would make a much better short sleeve tee. I was right. This tee does everything you need it to as a baselayer. It wicks sweat and dries quickly, do you need it to do anything else?

My favorite merino shirt

I got this because I love my OV Merino Wool sun hoodie. This did not disappoint. Soft adsorbant and doesn't stink after days of use.
