Product Care
What is the 1/8" Closed Cell Foam Pad best used for?

The 1/8" Closed Cell Foam Pad is best used as an ultralight add-on to your sleep system. It can be placed under an inflatable sleeping pad for extra puncture protection, used as a sit pad, stretching mat, gear platform, backup sleeping layer, or added to a frameless backpack for comfort and structure. It is designed to add versatility and reliability without adding meaningful weight to your pack.

Can this foam pad replace my inflatable sleeping pad?

For most backpackers, no. This pad is only 1/8 inch thick, so it is not intended to replace a full inflatable sleeping pad for comfort or insulation. Its main purpose is to supplement your primary sleeping pad by adding puncture protection, stability, a small insulation boost, and emergency backup if your inflatable pad fails.

How much insulation does the 1/8" Closed Cell Foam Pad add?

The pad adds an estimated 0.5 R-value when used with your main sleeping pad. That extra layer helps create more separation between you and the cold ground, making it a useful upgrade for shoulder-season trips, cold ground, snow camping, or any setup where you want a little more sleep-system warmth without carrying much extra weight.

Will this pad help protect my inflatable sleeping pad?

Yes. Placing the 1/8" Closed Cell Foam Pad underneath your inflatable pad can reduce the risk of punctures from rough tent floors, small rocks, sticks, or abrasive ground. Closed-cell foam cannot leak or fail like an inflatable pad, so it also provides a reliable backup layer if your main pad is damaged.

How should I pack or store the 1/8" Closed Cell Foam Pad?

The foam pad can be folded, rolled, or wrapped around other gear for flexible packing. If ordered alone, it may be folded for shipping and visible fold lines may remain for a few days before fading. The foam can also show marks or color variation when new, which is normal for this material and does not affect performance.

Comfort Comes to Camping

I rely on this foam pad when I take breaks on the trail and as a sleeping pad. The pad is so versatile that I quit carrying a sleeping mattress, saving me a lot of weight. My butt greatly appreciates the pad when I take a sit-down break on hard-packed desert trails.

One of the most versatile pieces of gear i own

Title says it all. I use this pad for a tent doormat, or extra padding under my mattress on "pokier" ground, a quick padded dry spot to sit if im not stopping long enough to assemble my chair, a dry clean place to stand when changing shoes before or after water crossings....ive even used it to fan a fire and get some oxygen when i dont feel like using lung power to do so. Great gear, cheap, light, and infinitely useful

Love it!

This has become my favorite item and comes on every trip. So light and has many uses. I use it as a sit and rest pad. I use it to sit on my knees in front of my tent when getting setup at camp. I use it under my sleeping pad for protection and extra warmth, but also to keep my pad from sliding on the tent floor at night. If you have a frameless pack, it can also be packed next to your back in your pack for extra comfort and structure. A must have item for me!

Best pad out there!

I recently purchased the closed cell foam pad from Outdoor Vitals, and I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with its versatility and performance. In fact, I've found it to be an invaluable addition to my outdoor gear collection, serving not one, but two essential purposes.

First and foremost, I acquired this pad to enhance my camping experience by using it as an additional layer of protection beneath my sleeping pad. The reasons for this choice are two-fold. The pad adds an extra barrier against the uneven and potentially uncomfortable terrain, ensuring a more peaceful night's sleep. Despite its lightweight and compact design, it provides a noticeable improvement in sleeping comfort. At its affordable price point, it's an absolute steal for the level of protection it offers, making it a fantastic investment for any camper or backpacker.

Moreover, this pad has proven itself to be incredibly versatile as it doubles as a sit pad for meals. Whether I'm taking a break during a long hike, having a picnic in the great outdoors, or simply sitting around the campfire, this pad is a game-changer. Its insulating properties help keep me warm and dry, even when the ground is damp or cold. This makes mealtime more comfortable and enjoyable, especially in adverse weather conditions. It's amazing how such a simple piece of gear can make such a big difference in overall outdoor comfort.

In conclusion, Outdoor Vitals' closed cell foam pad has exceeded my expectations in terms of value and functionality. It serves as an excellent investment to protect my sleep during camping trips while also enhancing my outdoor dining experiences. Its lightweight design and affordability are major selling points, and I would highly recommend this pad to any outdoor enthusiast looking to improve their camping gear. It's a small investment with a big impact, and it has quickly become an essential part of my camping setup.

Fragile

This pad has seen only about 60-70 miles and a large chunk tore off. Besides that it's got slices straight through it from using it as a sit pad for breaks. If all your doing with this is using it so your pad don't slide around your tent, then it works fine. Seems like you really got to baby this foam it's so fragile.

Perfect for what I use it for.

Perfect for what I use it for-a sit pad, a tent vestibule mat, or even for extra protection for my sleep pad. I may even cut it in half to get more uses? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Closed cell foam pad

Exactly what I needed! Works great as a sit pad, nap pad and protective pad for under my sleeping pad. In cold weather, I use as an insulation piece ( folded in half) to sit on with my Nemo chair!

Excellent Foam Pad

Pad is strong but light and perfect length for a sleeping pad on top of it. Folds down flat and can easily be stuffed in a large pack or tied down to the back of it. Good protection for a sleeping pad and more insulation in the cold.

Great Pad!

This has been a great extra addition. I like to layer this with an accordion-style pad, and use as a sit pad for breaks on trail. OV customer support is awesome as well, thank you all again so much.

Lightweight & Larger Than Some

A nice light weight sit pad that could have many uses. I like that this model is longer to put under my sleeping pad if wanted and more material to fold up for a cushioned set. It can be a bit fragile if caught on branches. I would buy it again.

Highly recommendated!

I purchased this based on a recommendation from an article, and it has lived up to expectations. A little extra insulation under your sleeping mat, a dirt free area to cook, some foam for camp crafting (I am going to tie some backcountry flies!) or a yoga mat. Cost to benefit ratio is worth it!

'wide'

I was drawn for it being a 'wide.' I use this under my inflatable pad to help protect it from fir and pine needles.

Lightweight and versatile comfort added

Great pad for protecting your lightweight inflatable sleeping pad, sitting on while glassing, as protection for tent floors from dog claws, and a multitude of other uses. Well worth the weight. Doesn't seem to absorb much water and dries quickly.

Great customer service

I ordered a closed foam mat and when it came there was a blemish that went almost the whole thickness of the mat. I emailed because I was concerned that the smallest thing would cause it to tear all the way through. They said no worries, send us some photos, and then they replaced the mat, no further questions asked! Great service!

I just purchased the 1/8 foam pad

It's light, packs well and completely eliminates my mattress moving around the tent floor while adding to my R value. Plus, it makes a great seating pad. I love it!

Not quite long enough

So I got this primarily for putting underneath my inflatable sleeping pad on backpacking trips with pokey things, you know, sharp rocks, or cactus for the like. There’s some other benefits to it as well, but that’s the main use case for me, but unfortunately I it was too short. Now this is partially my fault because I did not take a close look at the measurements. I assumed a “regular” size foam mat would fit a “regular” size sleeping pad but it’s actually rather significantly smaller. In fact, even the long wide foam mat isn’t quite big enough. It’s 72 inches if I remember correctly and a regular size sleeping pad is 75 inches I believe… so great useful piece of gear but I do wish it was a wee bit longer. I went ahead and returned my regular size and at some point will replace it with the long wide, and probably cut it down widthwise by 5 inches because I don’t use a wide sleeping pad.
