What Makes The Tushar More Reliable?

Built To Breathe While You Move

Ultralight - Without Being Fragile

The Tushar was designed to stay light without sacrificing real-world durability. A 20D micro-ripstop nylon face fabric combined with the Torain® 3D Print interior half-layer maintain a 7 oz weight while giving you enough durability to handle rugged terrain.

Most ultralight rain jackets reduce durability to save weight (often using a 7D or 10D fabric.) The Tushar balances both, giving you a shell that’s light enough for backpacking but strong enough for real backcountry use.

What Makes The Tushar More Reliable?

Besides a more durable fabric, the Tushar uses TORAIN® materials by Toray (industry-leading fabric supplier.) Toray's unique fabrics and seam tapes adhere to each other much better than alternatives, as proven in the Jungle Test.

The Jungle Test simulates 1o years in a humid, wet, & saline environment.

While competitor fabrics and tapes deteriorated, the materials used in the Tushar Rain Jacket showed now signs of degradation.

Before Washing

  • Never wash your rain jacket in a washing machine that has an agitator.
  • Your rain jacket has zippers, please zip them up completely to prevent snagging during the washing process.
  • If you cannot follow either of these prior instructions you should hand wash your product

The Wash & Dry Process

  1. Use Nikwax Tech Wash (for technical gear).
  2. Choose Low Spin or Delicate wash.
  3. Choose Cold Wash & Cold Rinse (add extra rinse if possible).

What is the Tushar Rain Jacket best used for?

The Tushar Rain Jacket is best for ultralight backpacking, thru-hiking, alpine environments, fastpacking, minimalist backpacking setups, and long days in wet mountain conditions. It is designed for backpackers who want a rain shell that stays extremely light while still offering real storm protection, durability, and breathability.

Is the Tushar Rain Jacket actually waterproof?

Yes. The Tushar uses Toray Torain® 3D 2.5-layer waterproof breathable lamination technology, fully seam-taped construction, and YKK Aquaguard zippers to help keep rain out. There are two body-mapped membrane zones: one rated to 28,500 mm hydrostatic head and another rated to 15,500 mm hydrostatic head, both of which are designed for reliable waterproof protection in backcountry storms.

How breathable is the Tushar Rain Jacket?

The Tushar is designed to be more vapor breathable than a basic emergency rain shell. It uses body-mapped waterproof membranes, pit-zip vents, and a 3D printed interior half layer to help move moisture and heat away from your body. The breathability ratings are 20,000 g and 28,900 g depending on the membrane zone.

What does “body-mapped waterproof membranes” mean?

Body-mapped waterproof membranes means the Tushar uses different waterproof-breathable membrane zones in different parts of the jacket. Higher-pressure areas, such as where backpack shoulder straps sit, use a more hydrophobic membrane to resist saturation. Areas where breathability matters most use a more vapor breathable hydrophilic membrane to help release moisture while you move.

Is the Tushar durable enough for backpacking?

Yes. The Tushar is built with a 20D micro-ripstop nylon face fabric, which gives it more real-world durability than many ultralight shells that rely on thinner 7D or 10D fabrics. It is designed to stay light without becoming a fragile “emergency-only” rain jacket.

How much does the Tushar Rain Jacket weigh?

The Tushar Rain Jacket weighs 7.4 oz in a size large, making it a true ultralight rain shell for backpacking, thru-hiking, and fastpacking.

Does the Tushar have pit zips?

Yes. The Tushar includes pit-zip vents to help dump heat during hiking, climbing, backpacking, and other high-output movement in wet conditions. This helps you keep the jacket on longer without overheating between passing showers or during sustained rain.

Does the Tushar feel clammy against the skin?

The Tushar is designed to reduce the clammy feeling common in many rain jackets. Its 3D printed interior half layer helps keep the waterproof membrane off your skin, improving comfort and breathability while still keeping the jacket lightweight.

How do I wash and care for the Tushar Rain Jacket?

Zip all zippers before washing, never use a washing machine with an agitator, and hand wash if needed. Use a technical cleaner such as Nikwax Tech Wash, choose a low-spin or delicate cycle, wash and rinse cold, add an extra rinse if possible, and hang dry completely. Avoid exposing the jacket to bug spray containing DEET or oils, since DEET can damage synthetic fabrics and oils may discolor the jacket.

Not very durable as advertised

I do not write reviews, but here I am. I wore this jacket on a recent trip to Olympic NP, about a week after I received it. Disappointed that the "20D face fabric" was unable to prevent a small hole/tear on the sleeve from a branch hiking. For a $220 jacket, it was suggested I purchase a waterproof patch as the warranty does not cover any wear and tears. I do like this rain jacket and it performed well protecting me from the rain. But from being poked by a small branch as I moved over for passing hikers, protection is not as advertised.

You will get wet in serious rain

Well I'm not really sure how to feel about this jacket. It really could have been a 5 star. I spent the weekend in the PNW facing about .5" or more of rain. Ultimately the fabric around the hood soaks up water and drips down the interior of the jacket, getting my chest wet. If you had made the hood the same way you made the wrist and hip adjusters this jacket would be perfect. Honestly I can't decide if I should return the jacket, or keep it because even the big name brands wet out eventually.

The Torrain material really does hold up, and no other parts of the jacket wetted out even though I was in HEAVY downpours for hours on end. The "3-D Printed" half layer inside does get smashed and beat up with use, causing staining through the jacket. This doesn't hurt performance but it will eventually make the jacket look stained.

Great for rain

This happen today, it’s raining in Southern California and I was putting on the rain jacket to go out, put my arm in the left sleeve first and went to put my right arm in and it ripped my wife was standing directly behind me and she commented that the jacket just ripped, I couldn’t believe it!! Honestly, I won’t but a new one not if it’s going to rip that easy!!

Seam Tape is Falling Off!!

Really loved this jacket when I first got it. Took it on several trips over last couple of years, and never really had a complaint until the seam tape inside the jacket started falling off. Yep, just started to come of the jacket for no reason (see pictures). Until this point, I would have said that this jacket was the best combination of lightweight and durable for long distance thru-hiking. But the seam tape can’t even last for a couple of years. Very disappointing :(

Super lightweight, functional, and rad!

I bought this jacket about a month ago. It's rained twice since then and you better believe I've been testing it out. The jacket is completely water resistant. The zippers are high quality. I like the fit of the jacket; it really fits my body type well.
Outdoor Vitals did a great job designing this jacket. My only regret is not purchasing it sooner.

Jacket is ok, needs a better hood, company is brutal

Pros: Good light jacket. 7oz for medium. Seems waterproof in rain

Cons: Your face will get pelted by rain and soaked if you forget a hat, not fun. The zippers don’t have pull strings. The cuff is very small and difficult to pull your hand out off (odd issue as I’ve never had this issue with other clothing in my life).

Now for the company. Got a discount on the jacket for paying $1 for initial membership sign up. Then I was requested via email to register my account in order to create the membership (after purchasing the jacket at a discount). Proceeded to ignore the email as I don’t want to renew the membership regardless. Since then outdoor vitals has charged and refunded my card 5+ times in 2 days and sent 10+ emails. Very annoying and crazy to try and charge a card nonstop… not interested in buying anything else from this company

Tough to beat

I have gone through plenty of different lightweight rainshell jackets over the years. Never been able to get sufficient use out of them, before those jackets let water in through the membrane. With this experience I was a bit skeptical to try out another rain jacket in the UL category, but I am glad I did - the Tushar performs exquisitely. The face fabric is tough, and the inner print seems to keep the membrane in tact. Most importantly, rain stays out, and sweat evaporates through the pit zips well. I did put this jacket through the ringer last winter by skiing through the length of Norway (1650 miles) over 82 days. I did have serious rainstorms to start with, through which the Tushar kept me dry and warm. Approaching higher mountains, the main purpose of the jacket transformed to be an extra windblock layer when needed, through rigorous storms in southern Norway. Up north with spring approaching, I pulled the jacket out to protect against freezing rain. Kept my rain mittens and rain skirt stashed in the chest pocket, ready for use when needed. I have after this trip worn the jacket in everyday life and during rainy hikes, surpassing the number of use days I have ever managed from any other UL rainshell. Definitely a thumbs up from me for this piece of gear!

I gave this jacket a pretty good test last week in the Uintas. We planned a 7 day backpack and the forecast was for two days with less than 0.10 inch. Is it ever clear for a week in that range? No, you need good rain gear. We ended up getting probably more like a third of an inch for three days in a row, with weather around 40 degrees and alternating with snow, rain, and cloudiness. Perfect for hypothermia. Fortunately my recently purchased Tushar jacket held rain out well, even with significant half-hour downpours. I can say for sure it kept the rain out. It was too cool to say much about letting sweat out. The different permeabilities for the front vs back makes sense in the design. And the longer tail was definitely nice when bending over to do things like pump water, cook, get things in/out of your pack. Other reviewers mention needing a bill to the hood to keep drips off your face; I've been in the pattern of wearing a goretex sun/rain hat during trips and this worked fine for me. If you need a trustworthy, light and compact rain jacket that you can count on for multiple days of bad weather in the back country, the Tushar is a good choice.

Feels great!

Just un boxed, feel is awesome. Zippers appear trusty and seals are better than just tape. Fit is spot on (XL 6’1-225) depending on the weather it’s going to the Southeast Ohio Mammoth March!

Tested in the cold wind

Haven’t really had a chance yet to test it thoroughly in the rain. However, on a very cool and windy morning, I decided to see how it protect me and kept me warm with the wind. It was cloudy and just below 30 degrees, and wind up to 20 mph. I stayed very comfortable with a sun hoodie and a fleece shirt under it. As it warmed up and as I kept moving on, I unzipped the pits, and put the hood down. Nice cool off. I enjoyed the pocket for my phone and how well the hood fit around my face, especially in that cold wind. Looking forward to wearing it on my AT section hike this spring.

Looks like a Winner

I received my Tushar rain jacket about a month ago, and I’ve had it out in some moderate rain storms. It sheds water well, and haven’t had it “wet out” so far. I’ve had other ultralight, rain, jackets, but they all seem very flimsy and minimal. I like that this one is a little bit thicker and seems more durable, I really like the hood for a ball cap also. Great jacket.

A good rain jacket overall

Good fit, finish and lightweight. Two things would improve it IMHO: Adjustable arm sleeve wrist cuffs and longer pit vents. I’d buy it again.

If it can handle this- it can handle my backpacking

Have not this in terrible weather until the winter storm this week. I was out scraping ice off our driveway and road as freezing rain was falling... my "work jacket" that was water repellent and supposed to stand up to these kind of conditions didn't.

I had a grid fleece on under and rhen grabbed my Tushar to wear when it started freezing rain harder. I spent the 90 minutes in it doing high exertion work and did not have any issues. The freezing rain did not force me inside and I was able to be outside in some of the harshest weather and I stayed dry and warm. Even with it being about 25 outside.

If it can handle this... it can handle my backpacking or camping in terrible weather

Excellent Performance

I've had great luck with this jacket in the Pacific Northwest rains this winter. I've stayed dry and comfortable throughout. I also walked into 40 mph winds and rain along the beach in Florida last week, zipping all the way up and wearing a hat under the hood, and the jacket was a nice comfort. I also received excellent customer service. I ordered two different sizes and sent one back for a return. Somehow it got lost in the mail and Outdoor Vitals refunded me for the return as soon as it was clear the Post Office lost it.

Very light weight simple rain jacket

Very light weight simple rain jacket. Sized somewhat small. I don’t think it is large enough to use has a shell over warm layers. I do miss side pockets but I understand that it adds to the cost and weight.

Think about it … no pockets in cold rain? Yuk

Think about it … no pockets in cold rain means cold, even sometimes painful, hands.

Maybe it’s my own fault. I own a Venus hoodie and love it. I’ve had it out on countless trips as well as years of day to day wear. It has no pockets. I convinced myself based on that experience to pull the trigger on the Tushar rain jacket. Everything else about it is awesome. It has proven to be a great rain jacket with one huge exception - when it’s cold and raining you NEED pockets to protect your hands. The single ounce or less that would be required to add a couple of waterproof zips and some lightweight pocket material isn’t going to keep anyone from buying the jacket. How about this compromise … add the zips but don’t add internal pocket?. Just treat the pocket openings like the pit zips. It would be a way to get your hands protected by simply escaping the cold rain. It’s a cleaner implementation of my present solution - which is to put my hands under the front waist portion of the jacket and sort of roll the belly of the jacket over them.

This jacket is great in many respects

This jacket is great in many respects. Light, waterproof breathable but it has 1 problem I haven't been able to resolve which is that the stretchy fabric on the edge of the hood wicks water from the outside and then drips it down the inside front of the jacket. Super annoying. I've worn with and without a cap and in a decent rainfall I always get a wet front
