Product Care

Product Care

Your Zulu jacket is a high performance piece of gear. It needs some extra attention to keep it performing at the highest level.

Please read through the care instructions below to ensure that you care for it properly:

Before Washing

  • Always wash your Zulu completely alone to prevent down migration.
  • Never wash your Zulu in a washing machine that has an agitator.
  • If you cannot follow either of these prior instructions you should hand wash your jacket using the detergent and drying process described below.

The Wash & Dry Process

  1. Use a mild detergent like Dreft (for babies) or Nikwax (for technical gear).
  2. Choose Low Spin or Delicate wash.
  3. Choose Cold Wash & Cold Rinse.
  4. Hang dry until the jacket is completely dry.
  5. Then loft and redistribute your down insulation in the dryer by running it for 10 minutes on low or no heat with 3 dryer balls.

What is the Zulu Down Jacket best used for?

The Zulu Down Jacket is designed as a versatile insulation layer for 80–90% of backpacking trips. It’s ideal for early mornings, long breaks, camp use, alpine layering, and cool-to-cold conditions where warmth matters but weight is critical.

How warm is the Zulu Down Jacket?

The Zulu delivers exceptional warmth for its weight thanks to 900 fill power Muscovy duck down. With 102g of down in a Men’s Medium, it offers one of the best warmth-to-weight ratios available in an 11 oz jacket. While conditions & climates vary, the Zulu is ideal for most 3-season conditions when layering properly.

How much does the Zulu Down Jacket weigh?

The Zulu weighs 11 oz (Men’s Medium), making it Outdoor Vitals’ lightest down jacket and one of the warmest jackets available at this weight.

What makes Muscovy duck down different from regular down?

Muscovy duck down has larger, denser clusters than standard duck down, which improves loft, durability, and warmth retention. At 900 fill power, it provides more insulation with less weight compared to lower-fill or conventional down.

What is Zero Stitch™ fabric and why does it matter?

Zero Stitch™ fabric eliminates traditional stitched baffles. This:

  • Reduces wind penetration
  • Minimizes heat loss through stitch holes
  • Helps protect down from moisture
  • Improves durability without adding weight

The result is better real-world warmth than sewn-through down jackets.

Is the Zulu Down Jacket waterproof?

No. The Zulu is water-resistant, not waterproof. The Zero Stitch™ fabric improves moisture resistance compared to traditional stitching, but the jacket is designed as an insulation layer and should be protected by a shell in sustained rain.

Is the Zulu Down Jacket good for ultralight backpacking?

Yes. The Zulu is specifically built for ultralight backpackers who want maximum warmth at minimum weight. It’s light enough to carry on every trip and warm enough to justify its place in your pack.

How does the Zulu compare to other ultralight down jackets?

Many other ultralight jackets under 10–11 oz really aren’t warm enough as a static insulation layer. However the Zulu prioritizes real insulation instead, using high fill-weight 900 fill power down and Zero Stitch™ construction to keep you warm in cold conditions.

What features does the Zulu Down Jacket include?

The Zulu includes:

  • 2 zippered hand pockets
  • 2 internal drop pockets
  • Drawcord adjustable hem
  • Dropped rear hem for coverage
  • Elastic hood opening

All features are designed to add warmth and function without unnecessary bulk.

Is the Zulu Down Jacket packable?

Yes. The Zulu compresses easily and takes up minimal space in your pack, making it ideal as a backpacking jacket or a  “just-in-case” insulation layer.

Is the Zulu Down Jacket wind resistant?

Yes. The Zero Stitch™ fabric significantly improves wind resistance compared to sewn-through jackets, helping the Zulu retain warmth in exposed backcountry conditions.

What is the Zulu Down Jacket’s role in Outdoor Vitals’ lineup?

The Zulu is the starting point for backcountry insulation—the minimum viable down jacket every backpacker should own. It’s designed to work anywhere, in any season, as the reliable baseline layer for warmth.

Amazing light weight down jacket!

I absolutely can’t say enough great things about this new Zulu Jacket! Admittedly I have an unhealthy obsession with buying and wearing down jackets. I must have bought wore sold gave to my sons and kept close to 25 at this point. I still have all of my OV’s hand to god. The Nova has always been my favorite of the Line until this Zulu came out. The jacket just checks every box I need and like it too. No cold spots, down stays where it’s supposed too even after sleeping in it. The jacket is one of the lightest I’ve ever wore and the fit for me just works! Doesn’t matter if I’m picking up my pack or reaching over my head the jacket is cut to perfection. The warmth goes without saying for a lighter OZ weight down jacket. I had it on the other night in -10 degree with Wool heavy bases the dragon wool hoodie with joggers on my lowered the Zulu and a hard shell over top and I was warm enough to have to slow down or start dropping a layer. The jacket is a must buy especially if your an Ultralight fanatic! Thank you OV for continuing to raise the bar with each new product you guys roll out. Hope to see u guys on the trails one day!

My Zulu jacket easily handles "Delaware" cold (20-30's)

My Zulu jacket easily handles "Delaware" cold (20-30's). I'm just over 6 ft at about 190 lbs. The size I purchased was an XL. It fits great in the body, with a little room for layering if I need too. I have long arms (35-36") & the sleeve length is just right. I haven't had a chance to take y jacket on the trail yet, but it does pack down to a very small size.

Warm, Stylish, Packable and Light

OV’s Bluestone ZULU jacket immediately presents a fantastic and captivating presentation, setting the stage for an exceptional experience.

First Impressions:
My wife chose the Bluestone ZULU, and she’s always right! I love the color, especially since I’ll be wearing it primarily for casual outings. The 15D Zero Stitch Nylon Fabric is incredibly soft and exudes a sophisticated look with its quilted pattern.

Upon putting it on at home, I could sense the warmth gradually building up. It felt like I was enveloped in a cozy blanket.

The spacious interior pockets, which I initially overlooked, are a fantastic addition for storing gloves or snacks.

I was also pleasantly surprised by its ability to compress easily, making it suitable for carrying in a small waterproof bag.

Fit:
I opted for a 2XL size, and it fits perfectly, providing ample room for layering with my Ventus or Vario jackets.

The zipper securely closes under my chin, ensuring that the hood remains snug even without the drawstring.

In my opinion, the included hem drawstring is a must-have feature, as it can be adjusted from the zippered side pockets.

Performance:

I’ve had the opportunity to conduct a test so far. I took two 1/4-mile walks in 33°F, but it felt like 31°F, with a wind speed of 9 MPH blowing against me. The ZULU jacket provided warmth, and I’m confident that if I had simply stood still, it would have been even warmer.

One feature I would have appreciated is the inclusion of “thumb straps” similar to those found in the Ventus and Vario jackets.

Overall, I’m thoroughly satisfied with the ZULU jacket and eagerly anticipate wearing it in much colder weather.

Noticeably warmer than every other layer I’ve tried this season

Noticeably warmer than every other layer I’ve tried this season. I wear it over my Vario jacket when the temps drop and it makes all the difference. I like that the tensioning system is built into the pockets and that the inside is sewn in such a way where I can store my hat and gloves.

The Real Deal

This jacket is the real deal! I took it up to mountains to test it out and the jacket performed great. I really like the cinch on the bottom of the jacket to keep heat in. The hood fits perfect.
The best part of this jacket is the stichless design from OV. They are right that you don't loose heat with this design and it keeps the down in place. The jacket was super warm even in 33 degree weather with a wind chill of 13.

Far better than other jackets

This jacket is unbelievably light and warm. You do not feel wind blowing through it like I have found on other jackets. Highly recommend if anyone is looking for a super lightweight and warm jacket this should be at the top of their list.

I plan on bringing on my next backpacking trip

To be honest it’s too dang hot to wear it yet but I plan on bringing on my next backpacking trip for mornings. The way it is made , without needle holes, is great. The fit is good and the zipper looks like it will hold up. I’m set for cold. Thanks for the great sale I got to be a part of.

Incredible fit for tall, thinner folks

I am 6'7", 222lbs. I was very nervous as to how this would fit. Typically for my extreme height, my only options are specialty online stores for extremely tall people. I am not exaggerating when I say this fits me perfectly in every dimension. I went with the XL Tall. It fits perfect in the sleeves, chest, torso length, and using the hood doesn't lift the entire jacket up. The hood itself gets a great seal around my head and neck area to lock in the warmth.
Unless I go with a brand targeted towards extremely tall people, usually the chest area is the big issue with it being waaay too baggy. This is not the case. It is the perfect. I will be a lifetime customer.
As for the function/warmth/quality you can read other reviews, it's excellent. I felt obligated to vouch more for the fit for other "freakishly" tall folks out there that this is not a "Big and Tall" fit, it's truly tall.

I wore the Zulu over my Ventus in the Blue Ridge

I wore the Zulu over my Ventus in the Blue Ridge in early April. Temps at night near freezing and this combination was perfect. I liked how fast the pockets warmed my hands and kept my core toasty. It packs down great and weighs nothing. This jacket will go with me year round when trekking higher up. I Wish the price on the Ventus would come down, mine was a gracious X-mas gift. It would not suck if there were some nice down mittens in the future....

I needed a lightweight replacement jacket and after several name brand comparisons, used my OV membership to on the new Zulu jacket. Thai curry, a great meal and color! Received a couple of weeks ago so no thorough test yet. Did have a couple of 30+ mornings however, so tested for dog hikes only. Met all expectations for warmth and weight. Looking forward to using in the CO high country for hikes and camping this summer. Ordered men's medium for extra length and fits perfectly.

This is a great jacket

This is a great jacket. It's currently keeping me warm at -10 F in a 30 mph wind. I have a thin merino base layer on and this coat andI am shocked at its performance. The pocket zippers on this jacket have failed immediately, which sucks, but I do love this coat. I will be replacing all of the zippers once I return back home.
