Description

The NovaUL Jacket is built to be the one insulation layer you reach for on most trips, balancing warmth, weather resistance, and weight in a highly versatile design. Using DownLT™ hybrid insulation and stitchless construction, it retains heat more efficiently while performing better in wind and damp conditions than traditional down jackets. At around 12 oz, it offers a strong warmth-to-weight ratio without limiting you to ideal weather.

Designed for 3-season use, the NovaUL works as your primary outer layer in cold conditions and adapts easily to changing environments with pit zips for ventilation and layering compatibility. It’s not the lightest jacket or the warmest — it’s the one that handles the widest range of conditions, making it a reliable choice for backpacking, alpine travel, and everyday outdoor use.

Key Features

Packs Into Own Pocket: Easily transport or store the jacket in it's own left pocket! Simply flip the pocket inside out while stuffing the jacket inside, and zip closed. Use it when you need it, and pack it away when you don't! Also use the jacket as a pillow when it's packed away!

High Neck: Stay warm by sealing in the heat around your neck! When zipped up fully, the NovaUL Jacket goes all the way up to your chin for warmth and comfort.

Underarm Vents: If you start getting too warm but it's still cold out, you can unzip the underarm vents and immediately release heat to stabilize your temperature.

Insulated 2-Way Adjustable Hood: No matter which direction you turn your head, you can keep the hood out of your peripherals and see clearly by adjusting the fit of the hood to your head.

Adjustable Hem: Lock in heat by fitting the hem of the jacket to your hips and waist. No need to worry about cord ends hanging down, excess cord will be stored in the front pockets!

Water Repellent Shell: The Nova Zero Stitch™ fabric not only has 10,000 fewer stitch holes (potential leaking points), but is also treated, which makes it difficult to get the jacket wet. Water just beads up and rolls off! If the jacket does get wet, the insulation stays lofted and continues to insulate.

Insulated Zippered Pockets: Keep your hands warm in the insulated pockets. When combined with the thumbholes, you're hands will stay cozy! Also keep your valuables from being lost by zipping them securely into these pockets!

Athletic Fit & Drop Back: The athletic cut and drop back of the jacket keep you looking great no matter where you are. The drop back allows you to sit while keeping your rear and back fully covered.

Thumbholes: Keep your hands warm while still using your fingers and thumbs by using the reinforced thumbholes in the sleeves!

How Warm Is The NovaUL?

The NovaUL is designed for real 3-season use, providing enough warmth for cold mornings, camp, and alpine conditions without the weight of a heavy winter jacket. It sits between ultralight puffies and heavier alpine insulation, making it one of the most versatile options for most trips.

For colder conditions, it layers easily with base and midlayers to extend its range.

Why DownLT™ Hybrid Insulation?

DownLT™ combines natural down with synthetic fibers to improve stability and moisture resistance. Unlike traditional down, it maintains loft and warmth even in damp conditions.

This makes the NovaUL more reliable in real-world environments where condensation, sweat, and unexpected weather can reduce performance.

What Makes The NovaUL More Reliable?

The NovaUL uses Zero Stitch™ construction to reduce wind penetration and limit moisture entry. Combined with a DWR-treated shell and hybrid insulation, it provides better real-world performance in wind and light precipitation than traditional down jackets.

While not a rain jacket, it’s designed to handle variable conditions more reliably than standard puffies.

The NovaUL Jacket was designed as a solution to the long-standing problem that most ultralight jackets experience in the presence of moisture - "wetting out."  Our Nova technologies come together in a puffy down jacket that offers superior wind-blocking, down retention, & loft retention even in wet conditions.

  • More Reliable Insulation: Our proprietary DownLT ™ insulation combines 850 Fill Power HyperDry™ down (Allied RDS down - responsibly sourced) with a small percentage of synthetic to bring you a more stable insulation that stays lofted and warm even when soaking wet.

The NovaUL Jacket is designed to perform in various conditions without compromising on comfort. Stay warm, dry, & protected on your adventures with a more reliable puffy down jacket.

This jacket is ideal for all 3-season applications and uses. The fit should be just loose enough to fit a base layer & something like the Ventus Hoodie beneath it, but shouldn't be much larger than that.

Product Care

Your NovaUL jacket is a high performance piece of gear. It needs some extra attention to keep it performing at the highest level.

Please read through the care instructions below to ensure that you care for it properly:

Before Washing

  • Always wash your Nova completely alone to prevent down migration.
  • Never wash your Nova in a washing machine that has an agitator.
  • If you cannot follow either of these prior instructions you should hand wash your jacket using the detergent and drying process described below.

The Wash & Dry Process

  1. Use a mild detergent like Dreft (for babies) or Nikwax (for technical gear).
  2. Choose Low Spin or Delicate wash.
  3. Choose Cold Wash & Cold Rinse.
  4. Hang dry until the jacket is completely dry.
  5. Then loft and redistribute your down insulation in the dryer by running it for 10 minutes on low or no heat with 3 dryer balls.

Runs small but great quality

Originally purchased a size L for my 19 y/o son. He is 5’11” and about 174 lbs. Slender with long arms. This jacket was very snug and left no room for layers. I think that OV’s sizing chart is very off because it says to measure sleeves from base of neck to wrist. My son measured at 29.5 and the charts shows 33” for size Small. He measures 37” to his fingertips and 37.5 for chest. The latter falls within size Medium. He usually wears size L for all tops so I just went for L. Then exchanged for XL to leave room for growth and/or layers. It fits him very nicely. The jackets have awesome features that he will soon appreciate. And the color and craftsmanship are excellent. We will test it in the cold next month and I might leave another review for actual performance. The exchange process was very easy and OV covered shipping. This is our first experience with OV and I am already impressed with this jacket and curious about their other products. I’m including 3 pics of size XL and 1 for size L.

Seems Quality check missed on Down filling

Got a membership to buy the famous Nova ul and after receiving found shell and lining are rubbing against each other on the sides of the neck as down is almost not there compared to other part of the jacket. Then looking against a bright white wall noticed part of upper back horizontally have much thinner down than shoulder and lower back.
Trying to reach support of they confirm if it's a Quality issue for the piece and they can replace it.

Good jacket

Just back from three back to back camping trips in Colorado, between 8000-10000 elevation. Jacket performed great early mornings, evenings and handled brief sprinkles. Add to wishlist… an internal pocket IMHO. Thanks!

Buy this!

I seriously love this puffer coat! I had a Patagonia puffer for twice this price ,and it didn't hold up at all. Let alone the features this jacket has ,from the armpit zips to the thumb holes at the end of the sleeves. I seriously love this coat!!! Hiked all weekend in the Adirondacks with 50mph winds and snowy and cold conditions. No issues!! Thank you so much and I will be purchasing more gear here soon!!!

Best down jacket for the mountains

This is much better than my Patagonia down jacket. Backpacking through the Continental divide, it kept me very warm during 80 mph+ wind gusts at 12,500 feet. The welded seams completely stopped the wind. When it got too warm, the pit zips helped. When the wind and cold were intimidating at night, the adjustable hood kept my head warm. The hydrophobic down stayed warm against a sleeping pad all night without getting sweaty.

This jacket just needs a chest pocket to be perfect. If you use the pockets to keep your hands warm, you have to worry about important gear falling out.

Great jacket

This is my 2nd OV jacket. My 1st one bought 5 years ego (bright sky blue) and is still holding up. No disappointments here with their products.

Incredibly Warm for the Weight

Amazing product from Outdoor Vitals. This down jacket is incredibly lightweight while still providing outstanding warmth. Even during Arizona winters, it keeps me extremely warm — at times almost too warm, which is definitely a good problem to have. It packs down small, feels great on the trail, and has quickly become one of my favorite pieces of gear for colder weather.

Absolutely love this Jacket!! Such a great layer! The 10,000 less stitches help with the wind too!! Very impressed! Much thanks OV Crew!! 🤟🏼🤙🏼💪🏼

This is a great lightweight down jacket

This is a great lightweight down jacket ... Just a few of the features I like: an adjustable hood that stays in place in the wind; front zipper extends to cover half of my face; zippered, under arm vents, deep, zippered exterior pockets, and deep interior pockets (no zipper).

The NovaUL is my favorite jacket

The NovaUL is my favorite jacket. It is sufficiently warm on chilly 40-50° windy days wearing only a T-shirt under. The lack of stitching isn’t just a marketing ploy, it really does block the wind. It’s tiny and very packable when stuffed inside the left pocket. Excellent materials, excellent design!

This jacket is great! And versatile

This jacket is great! And versatile to ensure I don’t get too hot ☺️ My only concern has nothing to do with the jacket. I am a 5’11 woman and women’s sizes don’t fit well so went with the mens. The fit is perfect other than the hips.

Love everything about this jacket

Love everything about this jacket. I had the same jacket for about three years or so and it has been fantastic. Unfortunately, while hiking in a dense area of forest in the early morning (dark) hours, I brushed up against a significant sticker bush and tore a few slits into the jacket. I immediately purchased another one. The fit is great and it packs up nicely into its own pocket. I've worn it very cold temps and it works great with a few layers. The pit zipper pockets are great too to help with ventilation.

Still don't have it...

Well, since you've asked... I still don't even have the package to make a review... Because USPS seems to be a terrible choice for international shipping (to Canada). They seem to have lost the original order, to which OV immediately resent via USPS thanks to shipping insurance, but USPS seems to be a terrible choice in itself, as they seem to be slow and with terrible, lacking, confusing tracking updates -if at all. Yes, OV seems to be on top on the lost package apparently, but I'm not impressed with OV's choice of international shippers.

It's thin and easy to wear

I was looking for something I could wear casually in places where the temperature doesn't drop below 5℃, so this is perfect.
