New Poly Blend fabric will dry faster & retain shape even better than original nylon fabric blend

The Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie is engineered for optimal moisture-wicking, comfort, sun protection, and quick-drying performance while managing odor & bacteria buildup.

  • Moisture Management: Experience excellent moisture-wicking capabilities, allowing the merino wool blend to effectively draw moisture away from your body while retaining its shape exceptionally well. Ideal for both hot weather and as a base layer in cold temperatures.
  • Comfortable Fit: The athletic fit of the Tern ensures comfort without being tight or restrictive. This design enhances the merino wool's moisture-wicking properties. With no hardware, simplicity reigns, contributing to decreased weight for high activity.
  • Odor and Bacteria Resistance: Benefit from the natural odor-resistant properties of merino wool, making the Tern perfect for travel, running, hiking, and everyday use. The ultralight weight adds to its versatility.
  • Better Shape Retention: the new Poly blend Tern fabric holds its shape exceptionally well for merino wool, even when wet.  It will stretch sufficiently without “bagging out” & becoming shapeless.
  • Faster Dry Times: the Tern dries faster than typical merino wool blends.  This gives you better performance in high-output activities & will help you regulate your temperature better.

The natural odor resistant & ultralight properties of merino wool make the shirt perfect for travel, running, hiking, and everyday use.

The fit should be athletic, but not tight or restrictive- this allows the merino wool blend to more effectively wick moisture from your body.  There is no hardware, adding to the simplicity and decreasing weight.  The Tern is a high performance piece for high activity.

Whether shielding yourself from the sun on warm days or using it as a base layer for colder temperatures, the Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie offers unmatched performance. Elevate your outdoor experiences with a shirt that adapts to your lifestyle.

Nuyarn® Technology

Outdoor vitals uses Nuyarn® Technology in all of our merino wool fabrics & apparel. Nuyarn is a spinning technology that releases the natural performance characteristics of wool fiber that are otherwise twisted out by traditional wool spinning methods.

Essentially the result is performance products made from natural fibers that can outperform synthetics.

Nuyarn® can make wook that performs as closely as possible to the way it does in nature, to rival or exceed the performance of synthetic alternatives.

Types of Spinning

Ring Spun & Traditional Core Spun techniques compress the natural air pockets in the fiber, create loops, & restrict the natural movement of the fibers -essentially creating a rope-like structure that can be itchy next to skin.

Nuyarn® does not twist the fibers. Instead it drafts merino fibers along a high performance filament, resulting in 2 ply yarns with much more volume & aeration.  (This 2 ply yarn structure is 35% finer than yarns spun on a conventional ring frame. Combined with the Nuyarn® thermal advantage, this offers the capacity to engineer much lighter, high performance fabrics as a result.)

Benefit Summary

The Nuyarn® method of twist-free spinning allows us to create products that outperform traditional merino wool & synthetics, and offer a natural enhancer to athletic performance.

  • 5x Faster Drying
  • 85% More Elasticity
  • 120% More Seam Strength
  • 53% More Air Resistant
  • 30% Less Resources Used
  • 8.8x More Durable
  • 35% More Thermal Retention
  • 50% More Burst Strength
  • 25% Less Energy Used

Lighter Weight, Higher Performance

Compared to traditional merino wool, Nuyarn® wool is:

Phenomenal apparel!!!

I wore this on a 4 day raft trip and was so glad I got this to wear! Actually, I bought 2 of these! They kept me comfy from the sun during the day and warm at night while camping along the river.
One of the best outdoor adventure clothing items I’ve purchased over the years!

Amazing shirt

Used this in my 5 day backpacking trip in the bear tooth mountains and couldn’t be more happy with it! Took it through some crazy bushwhacking and there aren’t any snags, plus it’s very comfortable.

Great Breathability, Still Burned a Bit

I recently took the light blue/teal color on a 4 day trip in Mineral King. The hoody held up to the trip, didn't stink nearly as bad as it should have, and I generally didn't think about it. But I did get a bit of a burn on my neck even with the hood up the whole time. I started to supplement a bit with sunscreen under the hood. I didn't burn where the shirt stayed in contact with my skin. Overall I recommend it but it isn't UPF 50, and it isn't trying to be. It also fits well (I wear size large, 42 inch chest, 6' tall).

Whiffier than I was hoping

I wore this pretty much non-stop on a Denali expedition. I hoped it would make a good glacier shirt in lower altitude sunny weather and perform as a base layer in other conditions. I never got the conditions to test it as a sun shirt and wore it as a base layer day and night. It performed fine as a base layer. Seems durable, though showing signs of wear from daily heavy pack hauling for sure. Good fit, good moisture management, physically comfortable. Having trouble removing a stain, but hard to complain about that given the treatment it got. But one complaint, it was quite a bit smellier than I hoped. This was presumably due to the polyester/nylon component of the blend. I have struck this with merino-synthetic blends before, they are never quite as odor resistant as pure merino, but pure merino has its own disadvantages that mean I do not use it as a technical fabric. Anyhow, I put it through the wringer and it fell a bit short of some other blends I have tried on the odor resistance front. Enough so that I am tempted to check out another sun hoodie option for the next expedition. Wish me luck!
