New Poly Blend fabric will dry faster & retain shape even better than original nylon fabric blend

The Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie is engineered for optimal moisture-wicking, comfort, sun protection, and quick-drying performance while managing odor & bacteria buildup.

  • Moisture Management: Experience excellent moisture-wicking capabilities, allowing the merino wool blend to effectively draw moisture away from your body while retaining its shape exceptionally well. Ideal for both hot weather and as a base layer in cold temperatures.
  • Comfortable Fit: The athletic fit of the Tern ensures comfort without being tight or restrictive. This design enhances the merino wool's moisture-wicking properties. With no hardware, simplicity reigns, contributing to decreased weight for high activity.
  • Odor and Bacteria Resistance: Benefit from the natural odor-resistant properties of merino wool, making the Tern perfect for travel, running, hiking, and everyday use. The ultralight weight adds to its versatility.
  • Better Shape Retention: the new Poly blend Tern fabric holds its shape exceptionally well for merino wool, even when wet.  It will stretch sufficiently without “bagging out” & becoming shapeless.
  • Faster Dry Times: the Tern dries faster than typical merino wool blends.  This gives you better performance in high-output activities & will help you regulate your temperature better.

The natural odor resistant & ultralight properties of merino wool make the shirt perfect for travel, running, hiking, and everyday use.

The fit should be athletic, but not tight or restrictive- this allows the merino wool blend to more effectively wick moisture from your body.  There is no hardware, adding to the simplicity and decreasing weight.  The Tern is a high performance piece for high activity.

Whether shielding yourself from the sun on warm days or using it as a base layer for colder temperatures, the Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie offers unmatched performance. Elevate your outdoor experiences with a shirt that adapts to your lifestyle.

Nuyarn® Technology

Outdoor vitals uses Nuyarn® Technology in all of our merino wool fabrics & apparel. Nuyarn is a spinning technology that releases the natural performance characteristics of wool fiber that are otherwise twisted out by traditional wool spinning methods.

Essentially the result is performance products made from natural fibers that can outperform synthetics.

Nuyarn® can make wook that performs as closely as possible to the way it does in nature, to rival or exceed the performance of synthetic alternatives.

Types of Spinning

Ring Spun & Traditional Core Spun techniques compress the natural air pockets in the fiber, create loops, & restrict the natural movement of the fibers -essentially creating a rope-like structure that can be itchy next to skin.

Nuyarn® does not twist the fibers. Instead it drafts merino fibers along a high performance filament, resulting in 2 ply yarns with much more volume & aeration.  (This 2 ply yarn structure is 35% finer than yarns spun on a conventional ring frame. Combined with the Nuyarn® thermal advantage, this offers the capacity to engineer much lighter, high performance fabrics as a result.)

Benefit Summary

The Nuyarn® method of twist-free spinning allows us to create products that outperform traditional merino wool & synthetics, and offer a natural enhancer to athletic performance.

  • 5x Faster Drying
  • 85% More Elasticity
  • 120% More Seam Strength
  • 53% More Air Resistant
  • 30% Less Resources Used
  • 8.8x More Durable
  • 35% More Thermal Retention
  • 50% More Burst Strength
  • 25% Less Energy Used

Lighter Weight, Higher Performance

I am sold !!!

I received my Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie just before setting out on a 114-mile backpacking adventure through Carlsbad National Park, Lincoln National Forest, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Initially, I tossed it in my car, assuming the temps would still be near freezing. Since I never test new gear on major trips—only locally—I didn’t expect to use it.

Big mistake.

The Guads decided to throw me a curveball with temperatures soaring into the high 80s. Totally unprepared, I had to rely on what I had. And let me tell you—this hoodie saved me.

I wore it every single day of the trip—as a standalone layer during the day and a base layer at night. If you’ve ever hiked in the Guads, you know the brutal sun and lack of shade can be relentless. But this hoodie delivered on every promise.

Moisture-wicking? Absolutely—kept me dry even through sweat-heavy climbs.

Quick-drying? Without a doubt—never felt clammy, even after strenuous hikes.

Sun protection? Shockingly good. Despite full days of exposure, I never felt the burn.

I was so impressed that I immediately bought a second one when I got back. The Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie went from a last-minute throw-in to an absolute must-have in my gear lineup. If you hike in harsh sun, unpredictable temps, or just love ultralight performance gear, this hoodie is worth every penny.

An excellent base layer

I've worn the hoodie comfortably several days in a row with no itchiness or odor. I haven't used it in very cold weather yet, but it feels great while working out in 30's and 40's. The only thing it's missing would be thumb loops.
